I'm replacing my cockpit carpet this off season and have contacted snapincarpet.com for a quote. Their standard replacement with the black aquatrax in the Dunes color. They have an upgraded carpet with a new backing called Desert Sand. Does anyone have any experience with the upgraded carpet???

Yes, and YES do it. Really happy with the upgraded carpet. Others told me I should and they were right. It is so much better than the black backed carpets I saw on boats we looked at. MM

I think their upgraded backing is called "wave", or something like that anyway. That's the stuff you want - the black rubber stuff is what you may have seen numerous posts about... About the backing coming apart and sticking to the floor. Get the wavy looking backing.

Yes, its Nu-Wave backing and great stuff. The carpet is very soft on the feet also, compared to what I had stock.

Great. How closely does it match the Dunes in color? I've had several custom pieces made with the Dunes,, the first step down into the cabin, the transom pass-through just to name a few. They weren't terribly expensive so if I need to have them re-done I will.

Standard backing sucks, mine finished it's third season and it is dried out and coming off on the deck. Shame of it is that the carpeting looks brand new on top. I should have upgraded.

I have just finished my second season with the Snap In carpet with the better backing and it is holding up like new. No signs of dry rot like the black backing.

I asked them to send me samples which they did. Helped alot in making the color & backing decisions. I got the Nu-Wave backing. I was surprised that the whole piece was very lightweight. If I were you tho I would trace my old carpet pattern on paper and send it to them. Although they used their template the cutout for my cockpit table leg was off quite a bit and some of the curved areas. When I sent them pics of all that they wanted me to send them a tracing of the original carpet.

I have the samples and am going with the upgraded Aqua-trax. I am sending my old carpets and having them add 1/2 inch to the entire perimeter. Can't wait till May!!!

Dan, great idea, will they put the snaps in for you at that point or is it something you are going to do ?

Put the snaps in yourself. Otherwise, they would all be in the wrong place. Boatbuilding isn't like car building where all the stuff is in exactly the same spot.

Get yourself one of these to make the job easier. Any other tool will work you to death.

I have access to a brilliant canvas guy,,,,, one of my fire fighters who I trust my life to has a canvas business on the side but I'll likely not install the snaps at all. My OEM carpet shrunk past the snaps years before I ever fell in love with my boat and the carpet stayed put. Perhaps it was because it was STUCK to the deck but I'll role the dice on that one.

I really like mine snapped down the new may not stay down like the sticky mess of the original backing. You can do it later if you wish since you have a canvas guy. MM

Get the better stuff. As someone said it cost about $575 for two pieces. They sell the SS snaps you need, just count the number you have now and add it to the order form. They will send you the tool to install them and you just send it back when you are done. They make it real easy.

If you have not yet done so, you may want to check with Corinthian Marine Carpet. I was so dissatisfied with the OEM product that snapincarpet provided to Sea Ray for my current and last boat, I decided not to use them again regardless of what upgraded backing they may offer.

I got the top of the line Cornthian Carpets with a transom mat and step mat for just less than $500 shipped. As far as I know, all of their cockpit carpets have the Aqua-Mat backing, it is not an "upgrade". I was sold on them after reading reviews here but the topper was finding out that my friend's 1998 Regal 32' still had his OEM Cornthian carpets. The carpets do need to be replaced from 14 years of foot traffic but the backing is in almost perfect shape.

Sorry to sound so hard on snaponcarpet but I don't think the general complaints and overall dissatisfaction with their OEM product is any secret around here.
