Hi all, new to the forum, not new to Sea Rays. I have a 2003 260DA and the backing on the carpet sticks to the floor and in some cases is impossible to get off, at least with what I've tried. Looking for a product that will take the rubber off, I'm sure I'm not the only one to have had this problem.

Thanks.
Quin

Quin,
I have the same problem on my bridge carpet. I'm going to have to use a putty knife or a wide blade chesel to get it loose -in spots- from the deck. I think the sun (even here in the Northwest) baked it onto the upper deck. I want to remove the carpet when I take the enclosure down - so it doesn't get rain soaked.
Let me know if you get answers other than from this forum.
Thanks,
Bud

Try easy off oven cleaner on a small area first to test it. Before applying it, wash the area thoroughly with ammonia/water to remove everything on the surface, even the wax, and you shouldnt get any yellowing. I have heard that it has been used to remove painted on names from the aft of boats before. Make sure you apply a good wax and polish when done.

Have the '04 DA with the carpet. The sticky stuff comes off with a stiff brush and a little water. You don't know it's there until you take the carpet off!

Acetone. Leave an acetone-soaked rag on there for a minute if you have to. You'll need lot's of rags. A plastic scraper will help.

If you get the majority of the thickness off by scraping, chemicals will work faster.

Use a hair-dryer and hold it over the specs you want to get off. Will make it easier to get off with a scrub brush and just a bit of ammonia/water solution.

Thanks for all the replies and advice, I think the bed liner option sounds like a good one. One question, does a Stiff Brush mean a wire brush or just a stiff bristled brush? I would think a wire brush will scratch the gel coat pretty bad.

Correct. Nylon (or similar). But a wire brush would be very effective at removing the rubber...

I would not use a wire brush! I tried that method on a small area and it left a nice little gray mark (and scratches) on the deck.

I used the Durabak on mine over the winter. I've only had the boat in the water for a few weeks but it seems to work great.

1) it's messy as hell.
2) tape the sunbrella edges really good.
3) it stinks to high heaven.
4) let it dry for a week
5) if you get the textured stuff, the little rubber textured stuff will want to come off. The second coat I put on, I didn't stir, I just let the textured stuff settle on the bottom and used the smooth portion on top for the second coat. this "locked in" the texture.
6) When it dries, the carpets will shrink a little making it nearly impossible to snap down. Hose down the carpets, let them drip dry, then install when they are still a little damp. Much easier to snap in.

I used the textured stuff for both coats with noproblems and didn't experience the shrinkage either. so far I'm pleased. I did apply mine out doors due to the smell... holy crap it stinks

Hmmm... There seems to be a lot of chemical solutions. I have had no issue simply using a pressure washer. The rubber was backed on to my non-skid when I took my carpet off. Grabbed my pressure washer and cleaned her right up. Even used the pressue washer on the swim platform. Cleanest my non-skid has been since I bought the boat.

I took them to the local truck accessory place. They do spray on bed liners. Said they would spray them for $50. We'll see how it works. I will let you guys know my experiences.

John, I tried pressure washing, but there are spots that are really on there, cooked onto the gel-coat,, won't budge. BTW, I graduated from Clearwater High, always wanted to move back down there but the money is too good in Houston for the field I'm in.

Wow. Stuck on even after the pressure washer. Makes you want to consider pulling your carpet all the time...

I've only been here for six years myself. Really like it out here. Ahh, Clearwater High. My daughter is a Countryside graduate.

The decayed backing really can be tenacious when walked into the diamond cut non skid in cockpits. I've found to just let it set for a few days with the carpets off and it loosens up on its own. Then hose down with a strong stream and scuffing with a stiff nylon brush.

I'm getting ready to coat my carpets as soon as I can after hearing some "in use" comments about transmigration of platisizers in Duraback into the fiberglass. We've all had plastic materials leave behind shadows or stains in other plastics they were in contact with and I'm not wanting to risk my cockpit decks just yet.

I leave my cockpit carpets rolled up in under berth storage area. Only take them out when I want to use them which is rare. Never had a problem and they still look pretty good.
