Snakes on board!

Ongoing problem. Snakes on the boat. I have not found one inside yet but they love to hang out on the transom, gunnels , etc. I am in NC and the boat stays in the water at my dock. Water moccasins and Copperheads are a concern.
How the hell do I keep them off the boat!!
Convince the marina that they need a Mongoose for a mascot?

Boy, I don't feel so bad about my stingrays, sharks, and flesh eating bacteria anymore.......

Yep, same here, water moccasins as well, never saw one enter a boat though. Usually just see them swimming around the marina.
No Water Moccasins that far north in Maryland. Probably plain old water snakes. They keep the duck and rodent population down.

I guess no one told these guys that ... There are slight differences between the common brown water snake and a Moccasin.

Next time I will ask it what name and pronoun it would prefer!:)

Well aren't you the clever one today. If these are not Moccasins then I am not going to be the first to test that theory.

Moccasins tend to have darker bands and usually are more aggressive, just like these are that I've seen. Not to mention their head is more diamond shaped then the brown snakes are. Not a fan of anything that wants to bite me, not even my wife.

eastern massasauga rattlesnake is in our area - had one on our back brick patio. Rare but around great lakes. Fwiw

My wife won’t go in the garden shed because I told her that I saw a snake in there once. 20 years ago, so I can’t imagine how she’d react to this.

I was helping my dock neighbor work on his boat a few years ago when he encountered a snake in the EC. He was pretty well squeezed in there to begin with and freaked out. He caught every sharp edge and hit his head on everything there was on the way out.

I didn’t know what happened until it was over. It took all of two seconds.

They don’t bother me but I don’t want them on the boat or in the house.

Telling your wife about the snake in the shed was just not smart!

Could be a moccasin, but when it comes to snakes, my rule of thumb is it you are close enough to see it’s eys and head clearly you are too close.

My dad’s way of handling a snake sighting was a 12ga shotgun - bang no more snake. Not sure that would be a good idea on the boat though.

No, it wasn’t but was said casually before I knew of her phobia.

Trouble is that there are lots of snakes here and I can say first hand that the repellent powders and whatnot don’t work at all.

I've seen moth balls work on some, but I think the venomous ones are too aggressive to care.

Here in MD, we get 5-6 long black snakes and also green tree snakes. Not venomous but they work on them, keeps the wife happy.

The one in the shed was black and about 4 feet long.

It slithered out from under the riding mower upon startup.

I practically shot straight up out of the seat and hung from the rafters and I’m not afraid of snakes.

I usually just grab the garters in the yard and relocate (throw) them across the stream out back. They return and the process begins again.

Where I live was in the sticks not too many years ago and snakes were a daily encounter. And we get em big - I've been up close and too personal to an 8 foot diamond back rattlesnake, found a coral snake in my garage, and the occasional cotton mouth in the back yard. But the coolest looking was an Indigo that was over eight feet long that frequented my yard. Then the racers, water snakes and obviusly the garter. My cat had a propensity to bring snakes into the house and let them go which was not good.

Get a pen mongoose? We have tons of water moccasins on our lake, but I have never seen one get on a boat. We did have one try once. We were in the middle of the lake, about a mile from any shore, and a little one approached the boat. But it couldn't overcome the height of the swim platform.

I hate snakes.
I could have gone all season without hearing that. We come down twice and year and bring the boat. go to a cove over by SDC and listen to the radio and have cocktails. I've seen banded water snakes but never a coppercobramocisan in the lake.

Back in Bradenton, I had a decent sized backyard with nobody directly behind me and I also had a big Indigo that hung around the back. It got used to me mowing. I'd be out mowing and I'd see his head periscope up to see if it was me. He'd just lay there until I got close and then move over into the mowed area and then hang out there. Never saw a coral over there but saw a couple in DeBary area.

I like seeing the big black ones around, as they eat copperheads.

Here is the best part .......wacky Virginia tree huggers have an endangered snake list (Canebrake Rattlesnake, Timber Rattlesnake and Northern Pinesnake) as well as a protected bird list (including the nuisance downy Red Headed Woodpecker) that if you kill one.....you go to jail and pay a $10k fine.

If you are an illegal......you get a monthly debit card, food and free housing and everything you can steal with no consequence.

It would appear some portion of our "justice" system is badly broken.
