Twin MAG 350's
My nmea 0183 2008 boat has DTS w/Axial and vesselview. The current chartplotter is not connected to the vesselview. My quick look is the cable connector to the vesselview shows the adapter but no harness attached with the 0183 wires. I'll have to find a harness for that connector to make the 0183 connection to a new garmin 7607xsv. The latest garmin comes with a J1939 port too.

Can I connect that j1939 to one of the spare smartcraft junction box ports somehow and get engine info to the garmin? Maybe with this cable: https://store.neweagle.net/smartcraft-to-j1939.html

If so does it matter which junction box connector I use and will I pick up both engines?

Or do I have to set up nmea 2000 using a gateway?

thanks

On page 48 of the user manual it states the unit can receive J1939 PGN's. So I would say yes you can use the display for exactly that. The issue is the cable and wiring it up right.

But I would go with something like the Maretron J1939 to NMEA 2000 gateway for piece of mind on it always working. There may be cheaper solutions then Maretron out there as well, Maretron is pretty good from my experiences.

There should be a two wire "harness" attached to the VV harness via a two terminal plug. One wire is blue, the other white with a blue stripe. If you don't have one you can make one if you have access to the plug components. I may have one in my box of spare parts from when I did my SC conversion. Your VV only accepts inbound data from the MFD display to create the nav screens. Let me look throuugh my box of bits and if I have the wires, they're yours. I'll just need an address, but we can sort that out after I determine if I have the harness.

You may eventually need a NMEA2000 network, but to set one up just to export data to the VV would be a lot of expense when the alternative is to connect two wires. I'll PM you after I determine if I have the parts. I'm pretty sure I do.

Thanks for the offer, but I found the cable for 9.95 on ebay with free shipping so I just ordered it. I did make a few calls to see if the j1939 port on the gpsmap could somehow connect to the smartcraft junction box for engine data, but boy is everyone clueless at Searay/Mercury/Garmin. You'd think after all these years smartcraft would be well understood but it seems like a well-kept secret. It does seem like the gpsmap would only monitor one engine though through that j1939 port so I probably won't bother. I already have vesselview on the console. Thanks!
