I need some help understanding the "trim sync" function on the SmartCraft. As I'm going through the water, the SmartCraft gauges will sometimes change the Trim setting -- bouncing from 1-5 on either side -- without any input on my part via the trim tabs. Is it automatically trying to find the right trim setting for me? Or is it trying to tell me what I SHOULD be manually setting the trim at?

I will often set the center SmartCraft gauge on RPM sync and feather the throttles to ensure that both engines are running around the same rpms. But the trim synch seems to have a mind of its own.

Help!

Still having issues with my SmartCraft gauges reading wildly on my 2005 320 while under power on the water; the readings will sometimes start jumping anywhere between 1-10. In researching a little more, I've found that the SC system certainly isn't "controlling" the trim at all. Anyone know if it could be a bad trim sending unit? BTW, it does it on both sides -- are there sending units for each of my sterndrives?

I know I've already got a bad water temp sensor -- it constantly reads around 120-134* for the water temp! But it didn't make sense to take the boat out of the water just to replace that one sensor. If it sounds like I need to replace the trim sending units, then I might be getting closer to having reason to take it out and make some repairs to the electronics.

Any help here is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yes, The trim sending 'units' are mounted on each drive. There are two, one on each side. These are the hockey puck sized things on the sides of the gimbal ring right where the bell housing pivot pins are located.

They also function as covers for the bell housing pivot pins. It seems odd that both would be bad. I'd contact Merc Customer Service and find out if one bad unit could be corrupting the trim data being reported for both. Alternatively the fault may be in the SC system and how it is interpreting the trim data.
