I'm thinking that my transducer is shot. Depth gauge not funtioning and sea water temperature reading minus 29 degrees. I tried shutting everything down several times but came back with the same result. On my SC5000 it has the thru hull transducer that screws in from the bilge, is there a reset program or do I need to replace the ducer?

Yes, what you have described are classic symptoms for a bad SC transducer. You could try to check the connection where it plugs in to the engine harness (not sure which side on your boat) but I would say it is dead. Good news it is an easy replacement, bad news is that the ducer is not cheap.

Thanks Jason, checked the connections and they look good. Will try and find one on line so she's ready for the holiday.

You might want to try the "Reset Sensor Detection" function before you change out the transducer. It's accessed from the SC5000 by going to System...System Calibration...Factory Defaults...Reset Sensor Detection.

Thanks Al, I've been searching the web for the last hour and can not find a single listing for the transducer, hopefully the reset will work.

What's the transducer model number you are looking for? I almost changed one out and may be able to help if it comes to that. Also, are you sure your transducer is wired directly to Smartcraft? When I had the problem with mine I learned that the transducer was wired via NMEA in to my chartplotter, then NMEA out from the nav system wsa routed through a multiplexer to Smartcraft. If you can read depth on your nav instruments you are likely wired that way since Smartcraft can only receive and not send navigation data. In my case I had indications that the transducer was bad but it turned out to be the multiplexer.

Only indicates depth on Smartcraft panel. Transducer was replaced 3 years ago by MM when I purchased the boat, information on the tag is as folows:
AIRMAR
IDT800-P17-RETR
253 KHZ
PN: 44-094-2-01
Cust Part# 888828003

If this is in fact a Smartcraft transducer, you will have to buy the Mercury branded one. It is made by Airmar but only sold in the Merc box which adds about $150 to the price of a standard ducer. When I replaced mine, I used Part# 888828A12 but not sure if that number is still the newest variant.

As Al suggested, make sure it is truly a Merc ducer. If it is, it should plug in to the harness on one of your engines. Generally, Smartcraft gauges with external sensors are not seen factory equipped on pre-2004 cruisers but you could certainly have an exception.

I traced the wire to the harness of the starboard engine. Where can I purchase one? the Airmar site doesnt list the part number.

I was able to find out that the new part number is 888828A13, all of the Mercruiser parts sites wont confirm if they have the part until I purchase it, at $300.00 I don't want to find out that its back ordered. Need to get it replaced by the 4th as I'm off until the 9th and wish to use the boat out of my local area.

Dasch, what navigation package(s) do you have? If you do end up having to replace the transducer I'm wondering if it might be worth it to get a new transducer and wire it up via NMEA 0183 to the nav equipment. Looks like your transducer is a member of the Airmar DT800 family and any of those models ought to at least fit physically into the mount; they seem to be readily available on the net at competitive prices. If your nav equipment is already sending data to the Smartcraft I believe it will send depth as well through the existing interface. It's very useful in my case to be able to display depth in more than one place. Just a thought, hopefully a sensor reset will fix it.

Al the reset din't work, I have the Raymarine package that came with the boat as delivered when new. At this time I just want to replace the transducer and plug it into the factory harness, should be under a hour if I can locate one.

Here it is at Marine Power Service. You should be able to call them tomorrow before placing the order to confirm availability.

I wound up ordering the E-Bay unit at $185.00, tried calling local MM that the E-Bay ducer was advertised by but they knew nothing of it. MM could have rush ordered it for me meaning available Thursday for pick up and costing north of $400.00. I will wait a few extra days and stay in familiar waters until I have the new unit.

Thanks everyone, the replacement arrived Thursday by UPS, simple plug in installation. Depth and sewater temperature are visible again

Glad you got it fixed. Did you do the installation with the boat in the water? If so what kind of water flow did you get?
