Smartcraft System-view upgrade

Looking for advice on upgrading the Smartcraft System View screen on my 39 DA with 380 QSB diesels. Current LCD screen is burned-out / unreadable and also the (separate) Alarm panel is not reading anything at all - just a black screen.

Will the new VV 4 or 7 replace my system - I have read that they are only usable with 2008 and newer installations? think I might need to replace the SIM modules, which are $400 each! I am pretty sure that I would need harness adapters. Would I even need the Alarm Panel with the new system? Is the VV a "plug and play" upgrade?

There is a cheat sheet on Seaboard marines website (sbmar.com). If you have any questions contact Corey he is sbmar's electronics expert but be warned he hates Smartcrap!

You may or may not need new SIM cards, but the details are on the website.

My display is failing so I am just starting to look at alternatives, thinking of ditching the smartcraft altogether but not looking forward to having to replace the harness from the engine to the dash. I may just wimp out and do the VV7 upgrade which from what I understand with the correct SIM is fairly easy but not plug and play, there may be some harness changes.

Jeremy, it might be plug and play on Mercruiser engines but from what I have read there were some bastardizations done for the Cummins and I think that's why they cal it Smartcrap at sbmar!

I did the VV conversion on my 2005. I needed new SIMs-bought off eBay for $200 each. Make sure you get the diesel "84-879969A harness". That drove me nuts for weeks!
Tman is pretty smart on the conversion.

I think the other issue to consider is whether to go with the totally new Vessel view 502 model. Will the Vessel View 4/7 be discontinued in the near future, replaced by the new, highly integrated x02 series?

I know this is an old thread, but I just got to this upgrade. Have 2005 390 with T/QSB380s.
I purchased a used VV 1.5 but a direct plug & play displays some values great, but others have jumpy numbers and shows a NMEA error, although the old DieselView had no complaints.
Was told by Cummins to purchase #4993480. What are compatible harnesses? SBMR lists:
