I am confused by the reading I have on my Smartcraft gauges with respects to engine hours. First to confirm, engine hours is only displayed on the engine corresponding display and is not accessible using the speedo display. True or false?

Second, the only reading I can get for engine hours is by pressing the mode button until the screen reads volts and hours. My issue is that when I bought the boat the owner disclosed 700 hours but the gauges are reading only 300. Am I missing a screen somewhere? Any chance the hours with the volts is trip hours?

On a twin engine setup you will see the hours for each engine by toggling through the TACH for each engine. What you are seeing are the engine hours. With a scan tool or Rinda software you can see the actual break down of what RPM ranges make up that total hour number. This shows how the boat has been run.

If the seller disclosed the hours as significantly more than is showing on the gauges, either he was wrong or the ECMs have been repaired or replaced at some point. The hours cannot be reset with the standard tools. Not sure what Merc may be able to do but I am sure they could clear if they wanted to. If both engines show nearly the same hours I would say it is more likely a mistake was probably made by the seller. I would think in most cases if an ECM went bad, it would not be both at the same time.

Maybe the his disclosure was based on the Genny hours??

So is there any other place on Smartcraft where hours can be displayed? I distinctly recall seeing the 700 hours when I was viewing the boat. In fact it was a point of interest to me because I thought I was looking at a 250 hour boat but then saw 700 or so on the guage. Both Gauges are reading around 300. So I guess I will assume its correct. Next time I have work done Ill have the tech connect scan tool to pull hours of ECM. There is no generator on the boat.

also as an edit: I bought the boat after seeing the 700 hours. No changes or repairs to ECM or Smartcraft. I did perform a master reset on all the gauges to set them up the way I wanted but I a, assuming that the hours are being pulled from the ECM's.

i could be going crazy and thought I was buying an700 hour boat and was wrong. Maybe I'll get my own ECM checked.

The Smartcraft gauges read the hours directly from the ECM. They are not capable of storing engine hours within them so what you see on the gauges is exactly what will be on the ECM if scanned, master reset or not. Could have been that you were just scrolling around in the menus and being unfamiliar with Smartcraft, maybe seen the RPM screen and thought it was hours?? That is the only other screen I can think of that might be mistaken as hours at first glance by someone not familiar with the setup. I guess in a rare case maybe the gauges are bad but I doubt that.

You might try scrolling thru the data available on the Tach to see if another "700" pops up such as total gallons of fuel used. But Jason is correct. There is no other place engine hours are stored except on the ECM. And the fact both engines show similar usage hours means you have a boat with only 300 engine hours.
