Boat is a 2008 185 Sport (Red).

Does anyone know what type of material the seat cushions are made of? I have a small <1" tear in the seat back (the aft bench) and want to repair it. Would a typical vinyl repair kit work ok???

Thanks!

It's best to let a vinyl repair shop repair it. I have had several similar repairs done in the past and a good shop will color match it as well as reinforce the tear and put the correct pattern in the vinyl and you won't even be able to tell where it was. I have also found those types of repairs very reasonable. From your description, I doubt the charge would exceed $100.

Your dealer can probably recommend someone dependable in your area.

Thanks Dave, but I was really hoping I could try to do this myself without all of the hastle of bringing this to the dealer or shop. But I definately dont want to screw it up and make things worse. Just hoping someone could tell me if they have done it themselves and what product they have used.

Mark I've used one of those vinyl repairs kits on an older boat I had. You can get them just about anywhere (Wallyworld, Boaters World etc).
When you get done it looks like you had a vinyl tear that you fixed yourself.
Have it done at a shop. You'll be much more satisfied with the result.

I had a tear in the aft seat of our boat when we bought it. It was near the seem so the canvas/upholstery shop was able to restitch it. $200, but can't tell it's there. I agree with AVGuy, I'd be bothered looking at one you can tell was a repair. It'll stick out like a wart.

Call an upscale car dealer in your area and ask them for the name of the guy who fixes small upholstery tears for them. There a people who go around to dealers for a living doing this work. The guy I used a couple of times came to my dock. These guys also provide the same service to restauraunts for chairs and bar stools. Small tears are about $75-$100, and take about 30 minutes to fix.

Just take it to a shop. I had a guy where I live replace one of the panels on a seat I had in 97 sea ray. He already had the material and it cost me around $30.00.

In my SUV (yes, I should probably buy some carbon credits for just having one), I had small puncture in one of the leather seats. The detailing shop had a guy who repaired it for me. I think it was somewher in the 'hood of $100....

So the consensus is to steer clear of those do it yourself repair kits huh.... ok.... my thick skull finally gets it. LOL....

I agree with SBW's recommendation. The same guy that fixed my boat seats does leather repair for the auto dealers as well. In fact I had him do two repairs on my leather car seats and they were done perfectly as well.

I recently had someone come to my pier and make a repair on my dash, and when he was done, it looked great...cost was $125, took him about 30 minutes...call a car dealership and ask them for the name of the repairman they use.
