Ok I have a 88 sorrento with an alpha 1 and was out last weekend and had an ignition problem, replaced the coil and while out on the lake I was having a flooding issue as well, so once I got it running again I noticed while having the sun deck up that a small hole right above the shaft coming from the engine to the out drive image.jpgthat was leaking water, this I'm finding out where all my water is coming in once I pull the drain plug, so question 1 is
what is this hole
and 2 how what do I do to fix it

sorry the pic is sideways

well the hole is doing its job, that is an indicator hole that will weep water from bellows.. you need to pull the outdrive water is getting into your bellows.

Could it just be the clamps are loose? Sorry fairly new at owning a boat, the bellows are supposed to new, I've had the boat 1 year, but I guess it won't hurt to pull it and just replace it all, I need new trim switches any how, so let's break out that famous $1000

Either the clamps are loose, the clamps have failed, the rodents really like your bellows
or is was installed improperly and was leaking last year.

not real sure on any of it, they seam tight, don't see any visual holes, but you cant see all it any way, so its time to just dig in....thanks for the input

I too have a sorrento albeit the s-24. I have come to learn a lot about this boat, so if you have questions I can lend a little help.

thanks I need all the help I can get, learning a lot and that there doesn't seem to be many of these boats around. I finally got around to looking into the bellows, and I ha a few clamps loose, so I tightened them up and going to go drop the rear into the water hopefully tomorrow and see if that took care of it again thank you all for the input. I love his site

Really should pull the drive and inspect u-joints and grease gimbal bearing if you suspect the bellows have leaked.

I agree, but I truly believe it wasn't leaking very long, due to not having a lot of water coming out when I pulled the plug previous outings, I have always kept an eye on stuff like that, that's how I found it cause I had an excessive amount of water for just a short cruise, with no one in and out of water I grease it regularly, but with all that said I am going to pull the drive end of season to do all that just for PM reasons, and replace sending units , appreciate the input and the lookout

You see, the part you dont understand is that the salt water sitting in the bellow is eating away the transom housing where the clamp clamps the bellows to.
So by the time you remove it you may need a new transom housing too.

Agreed! Would your car in salt water for several months? The last thing you want to do is have something fail while underway. It's too easy to pull the out drive to think about just leaving it

Looks as though he may be in freshwater as he says "lake"

ok I guess I didn't think of that, was thinking when I flushed after coming home I cleared it all out but that's not the case since the drive is not in water and there could be brackish water in there ....thanks for painting a clearer picture
