slip width to boat beam

My side of the slip is about 16' wide to a center piling which is just past the end of my starboard side floating finger. No one is on the other side of the slip but the bottom of the piling is exposed steel down to the water line and under water. Plenty of room for my 11.5' beam but a South wind blows me toward that bare steel piling backing into the slip. My previous marina had two center pilings separating the slip with about the same width as my current slip. The fairway at my current marina is 100' while my previous marina had 85' fairways to accommodate the large number of houseboats there. I won't put my boat at any marina that does not at least have piling(s) separating the slip. Greatly limits my choices but reduces docking angt greatly.

Our slips are 17 feet wide and 55 feet long. My boat is 13 wide but we can easily dock a friends 50 foot Hat and another's 45 foot Viking. Those boats are about 16 feet wide.

I'm 11-5...in a 12-1 slip...4 way tie, so it's two pilings actually...no finger dock..pita...and I stern in...Once I'm between the posts, it's a blowbote on either side...it's just a matter of time...

We have a 11' wide slip for the 9' beam. Wind and current on the river can be a challenge but it's easy to back into on a calm day. I also mount Trex boards over the aluminum slip rails. Having catwalks on each side is nice for washing her, Mike.

If you've got the right dock neighbors it should be no problem.
I had about 2" of clearance on each side in my old slip. No fingers, just poles. It was very tight, but not impossible. I would leave spring lines rigged from the dock to the poles with a loop in them for the rear cleats. Line the swim platform in between the poles, and then pull myself in with the lines.
Once tied up the boat was nice and snug and never had a problem in even the worst weather.
It got ugly the last season I was there when I got new neighbors on both sides. I wound up with a 37' backed in on my starboard side, and a 23' with twin outboards which were kept raised out of the water pulled bow in on my port side. The 23' was often tied loosely at the stern and blocked entrance to my slip. The sight of those props sticking up while I tried to back in was very intimidating.
I wound up buying a piece of property on the water to keep my boat at that year, I had been looking to buy something for a long time, but would have left because of the situation anyway.

I would say ideally you would want 2 ft on both sides of the boat, example: 14ft beam in a 18ft slip. This gives you enough room for harsh conditions.

We have maybe 6" or 8" on each side to work with, about a fender width. The fairways are also tight. One of the keys is to line it up right and focus on where you want to go, not on the boats next to you.

If you can dock at our place, you can dock anywhere.

We have a similar situation, I-beam pilings both sides, can raise heck with a swim platform if your not careful.

9' 2" beam in a 10' wide slip.

Plus side is it is a private dock in a very calm cove.

Down side is I have to come in at an angle because of nearby docks. I have never been to embarassed to pull along side the dock and walk the boat in to the slip.
