i was speaking with Mike Powell yesterday about docking cruisers at the various restaurants on Lake Norman.....anyone know which restaurants have slips large enough to accomodate a 340?...(37' LOA and 11' 5" beam)....and which docks are easier to navigate than others?.....i am getting better at maneuvering the boat each time we take it out but i am far from being an 'accomplished' captain yet....

thanks....

A few slips at North Harbor club look like they would fit your boat fine, that is if you can get one to yourself.

I've been to North Harbor, Midtown Sundries (forget the name now - next to Vinyard Point)and Rusty Rudder all had adequate space for a 340. Others that I have been to in my boat are The Boathouse (didn't really have any larger slips, at least not the docks right out front), Blue Parrot (pretty exposed, lots of wave action) and The Landing (unless you get the one spot on the end of their docks, no place for a 340), however, you can anchor in the cove and they will send the Tiki Pontoon boat to pick you up! There is another place, Bill's way up past the state park that I think is pretty good, but never been there. Other LKNers might speak up, but those are the ones we know, usually we go to the BoatHouse or The Landing. When I was at PYC, we went to the (then) Midtown Sundries and North Harbor a lot.

You can fit at the Rusty Rudder on the left end of the dock or the right end next to the gas attendant shack. The balance of the slips are too narrow for a 340. Port City Club (old Midtown) has plenty of slips that will take you especially now that they are not renting the long dock to Cliff Champions charter boat. As mentioned, North Harbor has slips that your width will fit in but they are short. Expect to hang out a good bit.

The end of the dock at the Boathouse, right next to my slip is usually open, and will accomodate your 340. It's not really a restraunt slip, but they won't say anything.
Bills way up at the northern end is shallow, and a slight trick to get into the marina. Need some local knowledge to get in there.
The Blue Parrot has a end slip, but can be hard to get it, and the water stays pretty rough with all the boat traffic.
Port City has double slips, and should be plenty of room as long as its not real busy.
Rusty Rudder can be a fight to get a slip, holding and waiting for a slip to open up in a 340 could be challenging.
I've never been the N Harbor Club by water, so no advise there.
Landing, you know about.

Best way to check would be to find time during the week and visit some of the restraunts and try their slips. Or, come visit me at the Boathouse and I'll be there to help you....if you need it. Half the fun of all this is doing it. Lol

Oh, by the way great to finally meet you and yours.

thanks for the info gentlemen....we are looking forward to taking full advantage of the things LKN has to offer this year including the waterside restaurants....as was suggested the prudent thing may be to visit them by land first and evaluate the slips at each location....

Mike,
good to finally meet you also last WE...thanks for the dock wheels and spending a little time with me and the Admiral....you have 'Frayed Knot' in excellent condition...we were impressed....

Yeah, there is a guy over at the BoatRack that serves some pretty cold beer, comes right out of the fridge in his boat - I think the slips are plenty big there also.

Cliff, there is another option. When you want to visit a restraunt, have me follow you in the 240. Then if your 340 won't fit in a slip. You can anchor yours, and use mine as a ship to shore dingy. haha

LOL.....after i saw the fine docking job you did this pat WE with Frayed Knot i don't doubt that you could dock it anywhere...maybe the easier thing to do is for us to get a group of LKN boaters together at a restaurant and leave it up to each person to get there the best way possible, either land or water....

During the summer weekend you can pretty much forget about getting into the Rusty Rudder with a 340. Starting at 11:30am the slips are full and boats are circling waiting to get in. North Harbor Club also gets very busy and is often full on the weekends by noon. If I can't get there by 11:45 on the weekend we do something else. It a long ride to have to turn around and find another option. Last summer Port City was the least crowded and always seemed to have room. They are really not catering to boat up crowd even though they have a dock. We no longer frequent the Landing Restaurant. That place has really gone down hill the past 3-4 years.

I don't know why I picked that slip to try to fit in. Sometimes I get tunnel vision, and all I saw was that slip. After I got into it, I saw that the slip right next to it was open and alot bigger. Frayed Knot was all that slip was going to take though! haha

Cliff,
You have a boat with a kitchen now.... buy a grill and leave the anchor set....

LOL, you are right Jason....between the gill (we have a Magma), the stove, the microwave, a crock-pot, and the frig we should be able to make all our meals if needed....it is just nice to let someone else do the cooking sometimes and it gives us an excuse to take the boat out....
