I'm wanting to install a Simrad AP2401 Autopilot System with a mechanical drive unit into my 270 Amberjack. Being I only have 9.25" clearance behind my dash along with tilt steering, an Octopus Autopilot Dive System, Type R is being recommended by a local marina. Here is the link:

I'm wondering if anyone has any info or experience on this type of setup? Thanks

Seems no one has any experience with this combination.

Does anyone have any experience or comments about the Octopus drive, or maybe know of a better system for the 270 Amberjack?

I primarily salmon fish the Great Lakes.

Thanks

I put the Simrad AP-14 on my sterndrive boat. You can see it in the pics in my signature. Drawback with the Simrad is that you may have to replace your steering cable if you have rack and pinion steering since it requires rotary cable steering. But it works well.

I do not have any experience with this unit but it is the first that I have seen that will retrofit to a mechanical system. What does a set up cost?

Sorry I could not help and thanks for the post. Let me know how it works out for you.

I've decided to go with the Octopus Autopilot Dive System.

The drive is being shipped today and will be installed, along with the Simrad AP2401 this week. Cost for the Octopus Drive, Bravo III kit, and cable is quoted as $1400.

Thanks for the info and suggestions.

Sorry for taking so long to post.

Thought I would give an update.

The project took longer than expected. After the Simrad autopilot and Octopus drive was installed, they had a problem with the autopilot loosing the signal from the rudder feedback unit. After the installation of the drive unit was verified as correct, by contact with Octopus. Simrad was contacted and resolved the problem.

The calibration and water test is complete and went well.

In order to install the drive unit, the hot water heater had to be moved slightly forward. A winterization kit along with shorter plumbing is going to be used. The winterization kit is in stock but the rest of the plumbing won't be in until 8/16/09. Project should be completed the same day. :smt038
