Shuttle Launches

We were at The Kennedy Space Center back in "86 and saw it take off one mornng. The sound was incredible, the light unreal like the pictures show. But one thing that few epolple talk about is the trembling of the earth as the rocket engines launch it into space. The experience is one you never forget.

There was only one successful shuttle launch in 1986. Jan 12, 1986 - Space Shuttle Columbia. On Jan 28th the Challenger exploded 73 seconds after lift off. A shuttle did not launch again till September 29, 1998.

We just completed executing a Combat Air Patrol mission in the vicinity of the Space Shuttle - 2 F-15's guarding the skies. I'm at my desk job - Continental US NORAD Region Air Operations Center.

You can set it to auto-refresh every 45 seconds...

I just watched the one go off a few minutes ago. I had never seen one. I'm 250 miles away in Ft. Lauderdale and it was clear as can be as it streaked across the sky. Amazing.

We saw the same thing from West Palm. We were headed to the boat and my wife and I both saw it. It was one of the clearest we've seen from here. I said "Look!!...it's the shuttle....at least I hope it is..."

It was spectacular!!

Been to a few.....

If you are planning on trying to see one of the last ones, there was discussion here previously

My favorite launch was watching Jon Glenn go up, from my boat on the Banana River.....

I work frequently with contractors on the Canaverl Air Force side where all of the un-manned rockets go up. Have been lucky enough to see some of the assembly of the Atlas models, and a little of the Delta assembly... I have lots of pictures, but would have to kill you if I shared them :)

If you get a chace to see any launch it is great....

coincidentally, being a space geek.. The last couple of un-manned launches have occurred just afteer the Space station went overhead. I log into Heavenly Skies occasionally to see when the space station is going to be seen overhead here in Florida. The nig bonus is if the ISS and the shuttle go overhead together, or slightly sperated...

Success...arrived Titusville ~ hr before launch, parked across Hwy 1 from Kennedy Point Marina, approached fellow at the gate begging entrance, one boater to another, $5 a head we were in...pool, bathrooms, shaded deck 6.2 miles line of sight across the Banana River....best location if you can't get on base or in a boat closer to the pad. Only regret was the sound was not as dynamic as I was led to believe. Was certainly audible but I was suspecting bone rattling.

Another check in my life's list of things to do.

Same feeling on another launch. 1 mile is too far away for that kind of vibration. But, hey, at least I got to one in person. I used to work for Grumman in NY, and saw the wings being fabricated.

anyone know best place to watch when taking in a launch from your boat? My wife and I are planning on catching one of the last ones and taking our boat down. We keep our boat in Daytona so only a short ride down the intracoastal or run outside. Thanks for any input!
