I am having an issue with my shower sump pump. Previously, after a rough ride I would pull into my slip and hear the pump running. I assume it was turned on due to the switch being jostled by some heavy waves. I would take off the plastic cover off the box, jiggle the switch once, and it would turn off. Problem solved.

I went to the boat last night and while reaching for a rag that I keep in the compartment where the breakers are, I noticed the sump pump breaker was tripped. I flip it and it keeps tripping. Any ideas? Could the pump have been running the entire time after my previous trip (3-4 days earlier) and done damage to the pump which in turn tripped the breaker? I dont shower on the boat and have no AC so I am tempted to leave it be for now.

My guess would be the same as yours that the pump ran dry until the motor burned. Check for continuity through the motor windings and/or match the ohmic value to the manuf specs.

I lost one pump already because the float switch gets gummed up and keeps the pump running until it fries. Best to take off the cover and pull out the screen and clean the sump each year.

As an update: I went to the boat last night; I reset the breaker and it did not trip. Opened up the sump box and then lifted the float switch. The pump came on and then tripped the breaker after 2-3 seconds. I repeated this a couple of times. I am installing a new pump and switch assembly tonight (the plastic box and all). Defender has it locally for $93.

As an update; bought new sump assembly from Defender for $93 and installed on Thursday. Pretty straight forward and works perfectly now. No more breakers tripping which leads me to believe that my old pump had gone bad from it running dry due to the faulty float switch.
