Hey Gang,

What do you guys have/use if anything at all, in your shower sump boxes (or bilge for that matter) that keeps the pumped water from coming right back? Were check valves ever used to prevent water from returning from long uphill runs of hose? The reason I ask is, I plan on using my shower next summer while on the hook, and I can't stand how my bilge pump in the cabin floor never pushes the water all the way out. It will suck it almost dry, but when the pump shuts off, about a quart comes right back down the hose. So I find myself sponging the dirty water out of the sump pit and wringing it out in the galley sink. I looked at a device a sales dude at West Marine recommended, but it was an overpriced piece of flimsy plastic junk that did not look like it would stop water since it had no mechanical function at all...just some serrated plastic vanes inside that I could see light thru. What I really want is a quality residential style ball check valve like what's used for sump pumps. But those are clearly too big, and require too much pressure to unseat the ball/spring. Can someone recommend an inline check valve that is designed specifically for bilge pump use? I have a standard 3/4 inch Rule pump. I checked the Rule and Attwood sites to no avail.

Thanks!

There is or should be a check valve built in the shower box.
Mine started leaking backwards with enough water to refill the box and reactivate the pump!

I installed another check valve just outside of the sump box that WMarine had on the shelf.
I also raised the float switch slightly (1/8 inch) to allow some water to remain in the box, in case it leaked back again..
I think you could order a OEM replacement check valve, thats nothing more than a little rubber flap. I don't recall the valve I used but, it was the only one they had at the time..

I make sure to use the shower enough that the water doesn't go stale and cause a smell in the boat.

:)
Mark.

If you contact the folks at Zylem-Rule using their web site, they might just drop you a couple of check valves in the mail. They did for me.

The valve goes in the clear hose:

Unfortunately, no...my shower drains into a "pit" that is basically a forward bilge compartment. The boat is old enough that I imagine they weren't using the boxes that are commonplace now.

I make sure to use the shower enough that the water doesn't go stale and cause a smell in the boat.

And that's why it's a problem, because I won't use the shower often enough to keep the dirty water "fresh". :smt119 I considered just pouring a water/bleach solution down the shower drain after use as an alternative.

I have just been through this one! The part number is M 1086. The rubber duck bill check value is slightly smaller than the one I had in my unit, but it still fit and is working perfect.

Mistercomputerman, how hard is it to remove that clear piece of plastic. I contacted Zylme-Rule and they are sending me the check valve (thanks for the info), but I am not sure how to change it.
Thanks Connie
