Should I get a taser, stun gun or pepper spray?

Yep. Pepper spray can be deployed from a distance (not much) but better than a taser that requires you to be within arms length. I don't believe civilians are permitted to carry deployable tasers so OC spray would be a better choice in my opinion

Thank you for the responses. I did not consider what is legal or illegal at Purdue University.

“ Can you carry a knife at Purdue?

“Faculty, staff, employees, students, visitors, guests, and all other individuals are prohibited from possessing or carrying weapons of any kind while on or in University Facilities or at University activities, regardless of whether they are licensed to carry the weapon”

Tasers and knives are out.

I can’t find anything about pepper spray on campus. If you think about it, pepper spray could be considered a weapon. In theory it might be illegal to have on campus.

I will get her pepper spray or bear spray.

Some even come with a holster. Not particularly discrete, if she's into that kind of thing :)

Well...if someone with a "bad heart" is assaulting a college girl they deserve what they get...
I hope you got a lot of money for a good defense lawyer. People think oh i just killed a guy in self defense, im good. Ha ha. See how that worked out for the father, son, neighbor in GA. Ya go for it.
In most eastern states it’s very seldom you are going to kill someone, and go back to bed. You most likely will be charged. Get a good lawyer who will bankrupt you.
Ya but 2nd amendment? You aint in Kansas anymore Dorothy.

The guys in GA was a different scenario. They deserved jail. They hunted him down. No probable cause for the arrest (yes if you impede their right to leave it is considered an arrest) and they initiated that interaction. But yeah, just be careful and be sure you are justified

That’s why I live in Oklahoma.

The way it should be!

I carry concealed almost every day. I am very aware of the risks I am taking and the consequences should I be forced to defend myself or others.

That said, I was CFO of an 80 attorney law firm for 6 years. I don't pay for lawyers.

Same here. Weighed the risk/reward and with the training I have been through I'm comfortable carrying when I do

I was trained and certified using Phase 4 OC spray back around 2003 then went through OC and impact weapon training and certification (baton, broomstick, flashlight, etc) through PTTC but it wasn't brand specific. Phase 4 was the only brand I ever carried but it said on the label 'For Law Enforcement Only' so not sure if it can easily be bought.

Unintended consequence of that could be punishing legal fees to defend yourself in the the law suit that is likely to follow. Pepper spray is safer alternative for someone who is not trained to deploy deadly force.

I got my daughter both pepper spray and a stun gun when we sent her off to college in South Carolina. Fortunately, she never needed to use either. After she graduated, she decided to remain in SC, having gotten hired as an elementary school teacher. She then got her carry permit, but can't bring her gun to work, which is a gun free zone...... back to pepper spray and taser.

Exactly. Nobody wins in these cases. Even if you are justified you still have to live with that the rest of your life and there is a good chance you will have some legal fees. Many people get an umbrella policy for CCW. I have not but really should. That said, if it comes down to my life or the life of a family member I won't think twice about doing what I have to do. Just hope that never happens

As I stated above, I don't pay legal fees. I have several good friends that are litigators.
That said, like boatman, I hope I never have to use my gun or even draw it for that matter. But I would rather have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it.

Stay away from Tasers, its a false sense of security. They work about 50% of the time for law enforcement, are single use devices, and intended for cops to subdue the suspect immediately after riding the lightning.

Pepper spray is a great option. Go with Sabre Red or POM, I can say from personal experience they both really fucking suck. Anything marked Law Enforcement Only is usually bullshit.

Pepper Spray comes in three spray types, fog/cone, stream, or foam. Fog/Cone is the most effective but comes with the side effect that you will most likely get dosed from over spray.

If she's going to depend on Pepper Spray, she needs to experience it firsthand preferably after getting a small spray to the face in a controlled environment (back yard with running water hose), and then have her fight through effects and perform a simple task of some type. That is a huge confidence builder while letting her know that an attacker can fight through the same effects.

As far as knives, a kerambit is small, lightweight, easily concealed, and devastating for personal defense.

ETA: Which is more important? Living or graduating? Prioritizing liability over living is wrong.

Her first order of business god forbid she's getting assaulted is to run, create distance between her and her assailant. Pepper spray will allow her to deploy it from a distance whereas to effectively use a taser you need to be up close and personal with your assailant which, by extension, puts the assailant up close and personal with you.

Honestly, a good, reputable self defense class is what she needs. A good class/teacher will show her multiple effective techniques that she could use to disengage and create distance from her assailant. They will also teach her how not to look like a potential target. Most are common sense ( walk in groups, don't be drunk in public, know your AO, situational awareness, not walking with headphones on, etc), but you would be surprised at how uncommon common sense is to some people. The old adage "Common sense is an uncommon virtue" holds true for many these days.

My experience with these perps is that they loath any type of resistance. They seek out those who, in their opinion, are weak, easy targets that will instantly submit to their will. Any type of resistance from the intended victim usually sends them running.

When my granddaughter went off to school everyone was worried and giving her advice. The most important in my thoughts is don't be an easy target. Avoid being alone, don't get 'shitfaced' or 'smiley', you might draw some attention you don't really want. Be observant, whether out in a club or just walking between classes.

I advised her to get some pepper spray and for a time when it's to late for that I suggest a small fixed blade knife, something for pokin', there's some pretty nice little knives made for that. The purpose is to surprise, stun, sting, stop the attack so she can escape.

My daughter had a black belt in Tang Soo Do and a couple of years of MMA training when she went off to college. That said, we were still worried. My step-father bought her flashlight with a stun gun on the end. Thankfully she never had to use any of that.

And don’t forget, even if the state doesn’t bring criminal charges you can get the defendant (or his/her family) will bring civil charges. So it’s TWO trials you have to worry about. Even if it’s seemed self defense, you can still lose a civil trial and owe a big sum for violating the attacker’s civil rights or some such nonsense.

vote for Mace or pepper spray over taser for all the reasons mention. One other: many tasers are one or two and done. Pepper spray can be used multiple times (in case you miss the first time, or there is more than one assailant)
