I brought my shore power cables home from the boat for cleaning. After reading many one star reviews for some of the commercial shore power cable cleaners, I decided to do my own thing:

1) Placed cable (but not the plugs) in my kitchen sink and filled with warm soapy (Dawn) water and let cord soak for a while.
2) Cleaned first end plug (outside of water) with Scotch-Brite sponge and Dawn.
3) Started working my way down the cord with the green scrubby side of the Scotch-Brite sponge and moved the cord as I cleaned it into the other side of the sink.
4) Once I was through 1/3, 2/3, etc. of the cord rinsed the cord in the other side of the sink with warm water.
5) Cleaned the second end plug outside of water again but scrubbed w Dawn.
6) Let cord dry a bit in the second sink, then went over entire cord with dry towel.

The cord on the left has been cleaned, the cord on the right is straight off the dock/uncleaned. The cleaned cord doesn't look brand new or anything - but I thought it came out decent enough using things readily available at home. By cleaning it in my kitchen sink at home, and being able to stand straight up while scrubbing, I didn't end up with any back or neck pain by crouching myself into some weird position.

Side question for everybody - see how there is a missing piece of the black threaded ring on the right (dirty) cord (thanks to me accidentally dropping it on the dock once)? Does anybody know of a way to replace that ring and slip on a new threaded ring?

LEFT CORD = CLEANED RIGHT CORD = DIRTY
