Shipping a boat

Chris, I don't do long hauls anymore. I did that crap for 33yrs. :smt021

Now that I'm retired, I sit around all day and drink beer then cause trouble when I can. :smt024. .

Seriously, $ 1.10 a mile? When I was with Xtra in the 70s and 80s I was paying $ 1.25/mile for new trailer deliveries and chassis repositioning.

Henry

No, not seriously Henry..The going rate these days is somewhere between 1.50-2.25 a mi depending on the lane and the load. Hence the  after the 1.10 comment! Almost anything less than 1.50 gets you laughed at. In fact I had ppl turn down 2.50 a mi today for a run from Grand Rapids to Milwaukee. Its still tight out there since a lot carriers fell out with the economy. Any one interested? LoL

Wayne,

haha, I don't get jealous often but in this case i can say I envy you!! You should move warmer and get yourself a wifi hotspot and consider it a full time job!!!!

Congrats my friend enjoy the lifestyle!!

The lowboy I used for hauling boats & other big machinery was only 6 inches off the ground. :smt001

Wayne, that's about the height of the trailer that brought my boat out from MI.

Skater nailed a few things about hauling boats. The bigger they are the more spendy the move is. When you get over 14' tall (on the trailer) boats have to be disassembled. Here's a shot of the flybridge being lifted off mine for transport. It went on its own trailer and ended up being overwidth on its own.

I also agree with whoever made the comment about dealing directly with the trucker and not using a broker. The ONLY problems that arose from my transport were a result of the broker's mess ups. That's not to say that all brokers are bad news, but if I'm ever nuts enough to do this again I'll deal directly with the trucker.

I still hanging in there helping out my local trucking friends when they need someone. :smt001.
