Hello,

I had a questions on how to get the shift slider off on the bell housing? On the very end of it there is a allen wrench screw with a small wire thru it, which i took off, but the shifter slide plastic piece will still not come out?
Can anyone tell me how to get this off?
It is a alpha one Mercruiser stern drive.

Help Please!

You need to unhook the cable from the inside of the boat that is mounted on the exhaust manifold shift bracket assembly, Look for the cable going down behind the engine.
You need to remove the cable from the bracket and then loosen up the two set screws from the black plastic end of the cable, Then you need to slide the hole inner cable out from the out side of the boat.

FYI, Now that you have removed that safty wire and loosend up the set screw at the end, You might want to try to take the inner cable to any mercruiser dealer and see if you can talk them into adjusting the the cable end, Because it needs to be set up just right for everything to work right, And you kind of need to know what the feeling is of the "End Play" Will feel like to make it just right, And to be honest that takes a little bit of experience to be right, And also to get that wire back on right to so it will not be in the way of anything. Good luck with it.

Im not sure what you mean here? All i did was take out the set screw and then the whole cable pulled out of the transom far enough so i could get to the trim limit sender.
If i just put the set screw back in it should be fine right? I didnt end up taking the whole shifter cable out and i DIDNT take off the black plastic end on the cable in the inside of the boat.

Hello, If you do not feel like going thourgh the service manual like what I was talking about in the Private Message I had to send you, Then I was able to copy the directions of how to adjust the cable end along with the safty wire, They are as follows,
14. Install set screw into shift slide. Tighten until contact with core wire. Then back off 1/8
turn max. Safety wire set screw to shift slide using a
figure 8pattern. Twist until tight
and cut off excess length of safety wire. Bend tail of wire in-between screw and tab.
