shift cable replacement

I've got a '78 Sea Ray SRV 187 with a 170 hp Mercruiser on it. Took it down to the river today to take it for a spin but it won't shift into either forward or reverse. When I got home I unhooked the shift cable from the shift switch in the engine compartment and tried shifting into gear manually. This worked just fine so I am thinking that it's just the shift cable from the MerControl is frozen up. My problem is that I have NO idea how to go about removing the cable from the controller end so that I can replace it. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance.
