I just got a 75 srv 190. I only had it out once and it ran great. The second time i took it out it made a bunch of noise at full speed and stalled out. When i started it it would not go back into gear without stalling. I ended up replacing the upper unit because the gears were all broken and locked up. And now it still wont go into gear it just stalls out. Some friends told me to replace the shift cable could that be the problem?

I would check the adjustment before replacing it
that model should have a momentary kill switch that basically stalls the engine
for a split second while shifting to aid in shift effort
if it's out of adjustment it will die all together

ps..I am becoming a pre-alpha expert triyng to get mine to all work correctly

o ok. yes it does have that kill switch. is that where i would do the adjustments?
that so far is beyond my level of expertise...mine was removed
but someone here may know... sorry

it surely couldn't hurt to disable it for testing purposes
that switch should be adjustable ...is your shift cable adjusted properly ??

i have no idea. i dont know how to tell if it is or not but with the day off tomorrow i will definetely give it a look and disable that switch.

thanks for the tips... i really wanna get this thing on the water it is my first boat

Did you replace the upper half yourself? If so, did you make sure that when the 2 halves were put back together that it was set to be in forward? When you pulled the drive and re-installed was the shifter in full forward?

If you remove the lower shift cable from the housing on the motor, can you shift into forward and reverse pushing and pulling on the cable? Have someone spin the prop counterclockwise for forward and clockwise for reverse.

Andy you can't dissable the switch, it will not shift in and out of gear. Check the lower shift cable to be shure that it moves freely any drag from corosion will cause your problem. The lower cable is not that hard to change.
