The wife and I went off yesterday for the night.... First overnight since first week of December. The Sharp Convection Microwave Carousel was dead and the new Toshiba 19" w/DVD player I installed last year in the forward stateroom was dead too.... The two different outlets are hot, I plugged another device in and it worked fine.
1.) something fried these two electronic devices ??
2.) one failed and fried the other ??
3.) has anyone had the Sharp repaired ??
4.) do just start a new reef with it ??
5.) what has anyone replaced it with ??

Mark, Did the same thing. Dockmate fixed Old TV's (FUSE). JC3
OH, Reverse polarity by a bad connection is what did mine.

I used a Panasonic steam convection model to replace our sharp. Choices in that small size are limited. The Panasonic required small minor cabinet surgery to our 48.

BTW, I still have our Sharp and it is still working, albeit 10 years old.

Ok, I'm in Seattle and we'll meet in Blaine and make the swap....

Thanks Gary..... Just placed order and my 12 year old Sharp will make some sea life a nice little home.....
Now, what about my Toshiba 19" LCD with DVD player less then 1 year old (I'm hoping for some kind of warranty?)

I replaced our microwave with a Tappan Convection/Microwave. I found out that while the microwave was fine with the limited ventilation inside the cabinet, not so with the convection oven. They're designed for countertop operation with plenty of ventilation;the oven would overheat after about 10-15 mins. on the convection setting and pop the built-in thermal breaker. I rigged up a bilge blower to exhaust the hot air from inside the cabinet to keep the oven from overheating. Noisy as hell but it works...

That must be why I found an end of an exhaust tube right behind the microwave/convection unit.....
SeaRay learned and corrected the heat buildup situation.

Not that it helps now, But I had the same problem, lost all tv-s at the same time, I replaced all of the outlets that have the electonic stuff plugged in with Surge Protected receptacles, did the same with by buddys 48', no problems since. Bob

Some of the members will remember my posts on this issue last year. I lost 3 tvs and the vacuum system. What I lost was everything that was plugged in and had a printed circuit board that processed the house current due. My issue was due to reverse polarity caused by a bad Marinco shore power cable that plugged into the box. Do you have 220 going into your boat or was it due to a power surge? In my case the 220 was routed throughout the boat through a floating neutral in the plug. Hope this helps. You need to find the cause or you will be doing it again.

Bill, that is exactly my concern.... What caused it and how do I prevent from happening again...? I am 240 volt 50 amp boat but 90% of the time I am using 2 x 120 by 30 amp with my Marinco Y adaptor..... Now the flat panel above the refrigerator is fine.... And of course the 1oo year old 13" w/VCR in the aft stateroom is fine too.... One of the previous replies suggested I put surge protectors on all outlets where electronics are plugged in.... It might well be worth it !!!

Thanks all, Mark

Mark, We put surge protectors on as well. No problems after that. JC3

Ok, I have seen the light and have ordered the surge protectors for all my electronics on board.....

Any ideas on the fried Toshiba 19" LCD Tv ?

can they repair them or is it junk too ?

Ok, just off the phone with Toshiba.... I've got a 1 year warranty and I'm still covered !!
So, $250 for a new microwave /convection and $50 for some surge protectors (I should've already had).......

Thanks guys for your input !

Surge protectors will protect a surge, not 240 being sent throughout the boat so be aware of the reversed polarity warning. BTW, the 13 inch tv can be replaced with a 15 Element flat screen and will fit in the existing hole, e.g, no cabinet work required. PM me and I will send you photos: bill.gillespie@sbcglobal.net
