Shall I dare?

Bill,
I talked to the Chicago Sea Ray Service Manager this monrning about whether or not alignment checks could be done on land versus in the water. He said they do not do alignment checks on land on Carver boats because their hulks flex too much. However for smaller Sea Rays like the 320 or 340, the hulls are stiff enough that land versus water hull deflection is not that much. So doing engine alignments in the water versus land is dependent on the boat hull stiffness and not necessarily if its an inboard versus V drive etc. Since you have a 320 like I do, you could have had the alignment checked either on land but you have the option to have it checked in the water. I really don't since I am still unsure at this time about the service quality at my new marina which is why I preferred to have my dealer do it.

Shaft alignment has to be checked in-water. Doing it on the hard is not the correct procedure as the hull is somewhat "deformed" sitting on the blocks.

Usually the hull will be splashed, allowed to "rest" overnight if possible, then any adjustments made.

Maybe that's not so critical on a v-drive because of the short shaft length, dunno...

I was going to say the same thing.
The shaft alignment should be checked after the boat is launched and has been floating a few days.
If they start changing alignment while it is on blocks, you are more likely to create problems than fix any.

Well she is now ready. After spending the weekend removing the shrink wrap, putting up the canvas, waxing and bottom painting she is now ready to splash at any time.

With a little help from Captain Morgan, the 2010 boating season is about to start

Great Job Buddy!!! She looks awesome!

I am scheduled with Ryan to spring commission on the 22nd of this month.

When are you going to splash her??

It is a real shame, our marina is a mess and I don't know what the early part of the season is going to be like. Got any room down there for me for a few weeks??

Brett,

I have been wondering how you made out up there! Sure we have room down here, come on down! Check out the website for the “Sock Burning” party in April and come on down for it. It would be great to see you again.

I will be splashing in the next week or so, the boat is ready, the marina is ready, I’m going to take the next good day off from work and do it, most likely before next weekend.

I’m glad to hear you got out of that mess up there without damage. It is just very sad for those who where not as lucky.

You GO! Bill!!! She looks great!.. I shall be following in your footsteps shortly. I was wondering if you were going to attempt it this weekend. I was tempted but everyone up here was sick this weekend, wife, daughters, and before Friday my son... I have been nursing them all. Knock on wood I have been OK. Tomorrow will tell if I made it out without catching it..

I hope you to Tom, it has been a dreadful winter for sure. Best wishes to the family.

So is all your fault that the end of this week is going be wet and grey, eh Bill? Just don't jinx the rest of us. All it takes is for one smarty pants to go thumbing his nose at the weather gods and pissing them off. The rest of will get stuck on the hard shovelling snow until June...

Congrats on getting the jump. I stopped by to see mine yesterday. Good thing I didn't have a blade on me or she'd have woke up naked this morning. I think I'm going to hold off for another week.

When I got home, I looked at the back yard and went "Uugh... I better get to work on this now before I get stuck doing yard work during boating season.". So... I started raking, pulling weeds, and just generally getting the jump on it. I got a lot done. The admiral came home, looked around, then looked at me and said, "Must be getting near boating season.". I think she had a flashback to last summer of me telling her, "If it ain't on fire, it can wait until winter. We're going boating.".

Thanks Bill. Will you be splashing her this week? Now you can relax at the slip and laugh at all of us as we scurry around!

I love it!!! I am going to get a condo or townhouse to get away from the yard work.. I am going to jump on it today as the family is feeling better and I don't want gardening and mulching to interrupt getting the boat ready..

Bill,
I was at my marina yesterday to pay the dockage fee along with making final arrangements for delivery of my boat to them on March 26th. So it looks like you are going to beat me by at least 10 days into the water. My marina along with the river is ice free at this time and I even saw one brave soul out on the river in an outboard. My bilge heater will be delivered tomorrow from Jim so I will be all set if the temperature happens to dip below freezing after the 26th. The only issue I face that you don't is the potential for floating debris in the river due to higher water levels resulting from the winter melt. That, not temperature would be the only reason for me to stay in my slip rather than letting her rip!:smt038
