4.3L MerCruiser w/ alpha one
I have a 4.3 Mercruiser. I am familiar with the once a year or every 100 hour recommendation. However, I only average 30 hours a year. Do I really need to follow that interval? How bad would it be to stretch it to every two years or 60 hours?

Thanks,

Pretty sure that once every year or every 100 hours means at least once a year. Preventative maintenance is cheaper than repair.

What part of the service do you think is unnecessary?

Do it once a year. I agree with the above post. Preventative is much cheaper than a repair bill. I only average about 50 to 60 hours a year so I do follow the maintenance schedule. It is cheap insurance.

I dont want to hijack Mikes thread but I was just thinking along the same lines. I have the carbed 4.3 engine a 2008. When is it advisable to change any distributor parts or wires. The plugs should be done each year (IMO) but not sure what the recommendation is for the igintion components. The manual says zippo on it.

takers??

I asked my mechanic the same question last fall with my new boat. He said that the good marine grade spark plug wires are good forever, not like a car's wires. That sounds a little fishy to me, but it's what I was told. In an automotive application I always do the plug wires and distributor every 100,000 miles, and that usually equates to every 2,500 hours or so. If your engines are 2008, that should be a while!

About the regular oil changes - I wouldn't stretch it out. It's cheap enough and not worth the risk IMHO.
