Someone dying is never funny, but this warrants a bit of a chuckle. Not a great endorsement for the product...

The owner of the Segway company died Sunday in a freak accident when he rode one of his firm's two-wheeled scooters off a cliff and into a river, according to British press reports.

West Yorkshire police said tycoon Jimi Heselden, 62, one of England's richest men, was found in the River Wharfe near Wetherby and died at the scene. A Segway--an off-road model--was found nearby, the Daily Mail said. Police said there did not appear to be anything suspicious about Heselden's death and that he had been riding around his estate.

Heselden last year bought the U.S.-based Segway company that makes the two-wheeled personal transporter.

The New Hampshire firm was started by American inventor Dean Kamen in 1999.

I saw that also.

I agree, fatalities are tragic.

Still, I did smirk when I read that. I could not help wondering if the new owner was having ACME build these things (Wile E. Coyote reference)

Note to the next company owner: work on breaks.

Wow that's horrible!

I've ridden Segway's on numerous occasions and there are a ton of fun! They are quite fast too. Neat little machine.

Why is this any different than hypothetically if the "owner/CEO" of Sea Ray died in boating accident? Guess I'm misisng the "humor". Somewhere a family is grieving.

With sincere respect to your post about the sensitivity of our comments, I hope people around me are laughing when I'm gone, with me or at me I don't care.

Tell that to the Cop next time you see him on one. They serve a good purpose for park, event, and community management.

Go ride one, then call BS how cool they aren't.

Its funny, because the way he died, not that he died. I mean, c'mon! the owner of Segway fell off a cliff while riding a Segway - that's funny.

Now, close your eyes and take a deep breath, now exhale and relax.

I agree that death is a horrible thing and the utmost respect is due the departed and the family. I also believe that a little levity and humor is all that we have sometimes to comfort each other otherwise we all turn into cynical b***ards.

Isn't there a sense of humor when a king dies on the porcelain throne, the owner of a personal propulsion company is thrown off over a cliff, or a pilot who has flown around the world and into space is lost during a routine flight in a tiny airplane.

My hope is in the Lord as the old song says. Please feel free to laugh at my funeral cause I’ll sure be laughing back at you.

Well said Bill. :smt038

Yeah, I don't get. Just as I wouldn't get if the owner of Harley-Davidson got killed in a motorcycle accident. I get that some think its a bit funny because of the gimmicky nature of a segway but oh well.

Anyway, I'm not going to be loosing sleep over it so no deep breath needed. Just like to throw out another point of view occassionally. But also, recognize a death is a death.
