I'm considering purchasing a security system from Flagship Marine:
http://www.boatalarm.com/advancedremotealarms.html

This system uses deck sensors that are epoxied underneath the deck, so you must have access. Coupled with a high water bilge alarm, siren, and strobe, it's about $650.

Can anyone recommend this company or the reliability of it's products?

Thanks

I had one in my Formula. It wasn't elaborate. Just had door sensors as there was nothing in the cockpit to steal. The system worked fine. I didn't really like the guy from Flagship. He was way too pushy trying to get me to buy all kinds of stuff I didn't want.

Thanks 390X.

They may have a new owner. I got the opposite impression. The guy I talked to, Ken I believe, said to keep it simple. He did not recommend installing the motion detectors or any other security device, just the deck sensors. I'm concerned about their realibility and prone to false positives only because I know of no other company selling deck sensors.

This was 6 or so years ago that I installed mine. I didn't have deck sensors. I know they also had snap sensors too. The deck sensors (I would think), work the same as a motion detector on a car. In a car, you mount the sensor to the car itself, and if the car vibrates, it rattles the sensor and the alarm goes off. The ones I've seen in cars have adjustable sensitivity, and they needed a jolt to go off, wind blowing against the car would do it too if you had it adjusted too sensitively. I would expect the deck sensor would need more of a jolt too (someone stepping on it), so just rocking wouldn't set it off, but they'd have to confirm that for you.

Tim,
Let me know what system you decide to go with. I'm also looking to add a security system to my 42 and have looked on line.
I want to have a dialer to call my cell if there is an intruder.

Thanks Joel

Thanks guys. I am leaning toward Flagship Marine and their deck sensors because it is a simple system that is not likely to give false positives. At least that's what they claim.

Interestingly, the owner at flagship does not recommend motion detectors even though he sells them for his system. He said there are too many false alarms with motion detectors. It's my understanding the deck sensors have to be calibrated after they are installed and once done so are very reliable.

I wanted a system that alarms before the boat is broken into, hence the deck sensors.

Incidently, they also have a dialer option. IMO that's wasted money, the intruder has already done his damage, and the system is just telling you it already happened.
