We were on Lake Washington for a few days last week for the hydros and Blue Angels airshow. On Saturday, we were anchored on the east side of the Bailey Peninsula between Mercer Island and Seward Park along with anywhere from 100 to 300 other boats ranging in size from 14 to 60 feet. Tight anchorage to say the least. Lot's of teens and 20 somethings in ski boats with those round tubular speakers attached to their tow arches and obnoxious rap and robotic crap music blasting out cruising in and out of the anchored boats. LOT'S of swimmers in the water even though it was a cool and drizzly day. Water cannons squirting and water balloons were flying everywhere.

Anyway, along comes this 18 or so foot long aluminum open cockpit fishing boat with a fool at the controls. He was trimming his high HP outboard up to make the prop just stick out of the water and then would rev the motor IN GEAR so the prop would send a wall of water towards other boats. With swimmers in the water, I did not think this was the greatest idea so I called on VHF 16 to the CG patrolling the area and reported his location and registration numbers. A short while later, another guy did the same and immediately got a reply from some other fool on 16 to "get a life captain." The CG then asked to go to 22a for a complete report so I did as well to follow the conversation. Apparently, so did the outspoken fool who proceeded to hold his mic button down every time the CG hailed the reporting party so as to not allow him to be heard.

What is it with people these days? Is fun so much more important than safety? I couldn't believe all the a***oles out on the water during this event. Arrogant, no regard for others, etc., etc. One guy even commented as my wife was washing the salt off the bow, "swabbing the decks is for losers." Well he got waved at by her middle finger and told to p**s off.

I love the hydros and the Blues but if it's going to be like that every year, I may pass from now on.

Hey Eddie,

I wanted to go to that this year, maybe not now. I can feel your pain.

I was fishing on the Lewis/Columbia River when a wave runner kept running right on top of my line. When I said something to the arrogant little sh*t (maybe 18-19), I got the middle finger as he turned and sped away thinking his "little" jet would get me wet. He missed.

He came by a few more times and actually tangling some lines. So I patiently waited, raised my Evinrude 250 with a jet. He must not have noticed I had it running, because when I said something again, he started the middle finger and.......well let's say he got a little (actually a lot) wet.

The other fisherman all clapped, cheered and we never saw the punk again.

I heard it was actually more mellow than normal this year, but there are always plenty of idiots. I took this year off from Seafair but have witnessed too many bonehead moves in the past to be surprised at this event. Hey, they only issued fifty-something drinking violations this year as compared to over 300 last year. Not a good family event IMO. The log boom is fun but $500 to stern tie is ridiculous.

On Thursday, we had a side-tie 60+ footer come in named "Big Dawg". Someone said $70 a foot to side-tie so this guy dished out over 4 grand for a 4 day stay. Wow! Best seat in the house though.

Eddie, sorry you had the bad experience. If you'd like to see Seafair from the pits in 2011, please let me know and I'll be happy to arrange a couple of passes.

Nice job last weekend Steve- great final race! I watched it from the comfort my recliner though.

Eddie's experience is one of the things I don't like about group/mass boating. My wife and I love the quiet and solitude of a quiet anchorage/dock with a group of other boating friends.

This is one of the nice things about winter boating in the NW. All the idiots stay home...

i took in this event for many years--on the log booms, eigther in my boat or someone elses--about 1998 it started getting a little more crazy !! believe it or not it seemed like their was less crowd control, even considering that the boating laws had become much more stringent by this time--the have at it boy's attitude is just to much for me anymore, and i have to haul my boat 275 miles.direct tv has excellent coverage !

We have experienced the same thing this year, and it isn't just the 18 to 20 somethings...We have witnessed bottle rockets launched off of a swim platform, from a boat tied up in a raft up (imagine the horror if one of those 10 cent missles would've went into the cockpit or cabin of an adjacent boat). We also had a clown toss what sounded like a half stick of dynamite off of the dock a few weeks ago. When I confronted him, he acted like it was no big deal...obvious no clue to the hazards of his actions.

I'm all about work hard, play hard, but I would like to work hard again to play hard another day. The all about ME, watch ME, crowd is growing on the water.

Steve, I am so there! Set me up. My dad (before he passed in 1980) used to write for a bunch of local boating pubs and knew Bill Muncey and a bunch of the early drivers so the unlimiteds have always been in my blood. I've probably been to Seafair over two dozen times in my life both on the shore and on the 'boom. This was the first year we've taken our little cruiser out and just kind of went with the flow of boats from one spot to another. The pits would be a great experience for me. Congrats on the win this year. Looking forward to watching the Doha race in November.

I don’t know this to be factual, but you would thing that interfering with a Coast Guard radio call on channel 22 would be a rather serious offence.

I would think so too. I believe they can track the radio signal through triangulation or something. But with over 500 boats in the general vicinity, it might prove hard to pinpoint the exact offender.

Eddie, you're on. Drop me an e mail next year stevendavidre@aol.com in late July and I'll make all the arrangements. You can also save my cell # 954-980-2643.
Look forward to meeting you and your family.

Steve, Welcome to the site. BTW you hydro drivers are certifiable. That being said, it's pretty cool to offer a pit spot to a fellow boater who had a bad experience. Go's to show that the boating community is more than flash and obnoxious tunes.
:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Steve, I've been watching this thread for awhile and want to congratulate you also on snagging the win here in the Tri Cities from Villwock. As you probably know, your Oberto boat has been a Tri Cities favorite for many years, even back in the days when Bernie was running the Bud boats.

I've lived her for over 30 years and have watched the races on the river from the upstream end of the course for many years. We always love watching the unlimiteds and the whole Water Follies spectacle. That is the highlight of summer around here.

It's guys like you who keep making it fun and interesting for all of us!

Thank you Bill,
Steve

Thanks. We love TriCities and my team especially likes winning there as the "Bernie" tree in the pits goes to the previous years winner. If I didn't get that for them, I think they might have me serving as an anchor for a turn buoy....
Please drop by the pits if you have the chance next year. I'd enjoy having you see the boat up close, get in the cockpit etc.
We Love what we do, and our team and the Oberto family appreciates you and the tremendous fan support in the TriCities.
Take care,
Steve

Steve, Congrats on the win, :smt038 & Welcome to CSR.

Ok, I'll be the first one on here to ask you for a autographed photo. :smt001
