Does Anyone know where the pump is at on the self contain units? I know the reservoir is self-contained inside but is the pump also? I need access to the pump because I want to install auto pilot. Thanks.

Are you sure you actually have power assist steering?

There are two different types of systems.
  • Sea Star Hydraulic assist. That's what is at the helm at the picture. Typically standard equipment. This system is not electrically powered; turning the wheel pumps the fluid to actuate the cylinder.
  • Sea Star Power steering. This is a separate unit that works with a hydraulic assist system. Often an optional item. It is electrically powered with an active electric pump and will typically be near the rudders/steering rams.
This is how my boat was optioned. A Sea Star classic tilt helm was standard, and the power assist was optional.

Below is the installation diagram for a classic tilt helm. It shows no power connections.

The pump and reservoir are one unit. The pump for the autopilot would be hooked into the lines going to the steering cylinder, and you would have a third line going back to the reservoir from the pump. On my 340, the hydraulic lines run down the starboard side to the steering cylinder. We put the pump to the right of the helm station, behind the cut out for the cubby that inserts into the starboard bulkhead right next to the helm seat.

This pic was just to fit the lines. We ultimately included valves to permit the pump to be bypassed. Of course, everything was zip tied and cleaned up and the pump was actually mounted, but you get the idea.
