Boat's in the water and all is well except for my electronics. After repacing my SR Navigator with two refurbished units last year I am again having problems. This time it is the hard drive and I am out of warranty coverage. I guess computers weren'y made for water and outdoor use. BTW, I never liked this unit much anyway.

I am considering replacing the Nav with a E120 or C120 to pair up with my existing C120 unit. Is this a simple installation given that I already have much of the hardware\wiring in place?

Thanks

Hey Mark....

The biggest issue is going to be the size of the hole you already have in the center helm area and wether or not the new E120 will cover it.

You will need to bring power to the new unit, and you can probably use the power source that the Nav was using...check the fusing sizes and adjust. The Raystar 125 will need to be connected to either unit (the existing C120 or new E120). Then a High Speed bus connection between the two and wammo!!!....both should then display radar and/or charts.

Excellent - thanks Dom I hope you and the family are well. Look forward to seeing you on the water and possibly the BIH this year.

I recently replaced the Sea Ray Navigator with dual E120s. I bought a new bezel with the cutout for the E120 from Sea Ray. It made for a neat installation. I had to replace the radar, gps, depth sounder and through hull sensor and install the secondary E120. Also, I had the mouse on removed and the hole filled. I don't think this is a do it yourself project.

I sea trial on Monday.

BTW, I went through 3 Sea Ray Navigator II units before I gave up.

Mthor:

I made the 'ass-umption' that you already have the Ray125 GPS, the Raymarine ST60 Depth/transducer and Raymarine Open Array on board and connected to your existing C120..... or at least the necessary cabling routed to your helm area. If not, then you will have to look at each item individually as Gervie suggests.

Gervie's suggestion to order a new helm bezel from SeaRay is a good $ugge$tion.

Depending on your own level of confidence, however, I would still call this a DIY project. Other then possibly the fiberglass work or drilling holes in the hull, you would have to asses your own abilities and level of confidence.

I can understand the radar antenna having to be compatible with the display and, if you have Raymarine, it may or may not be. I don't understand why any of the other sensors would have to be replaced though...

I'm pretty confident that the open arrays for the C120 and E120 are the same. In fact, the later RL series open arrays are compatible with the newer C/E series. Raymarine.com has an FAQ on this and you can check your array serial numbers there.

I agree, I don't see why Gervie had to replace all those other sensors....

That and the C-series doesn't network. Yes, you can share SeaTalk devices but that's it. If you need to mix-and-match new sensors I know the E-series can translate SeaTalk2 signals over to SeaTalk and NMEA 0183, not sure about the C-series abilities here.

Thanks everyone - very helpful

What are you going to do with the old Navigator units?

Best regards,
Frank

They're not heavy enough to be used as anchors, so they're COMPLETELY useless.

It's just a windoze PC. Should be hackable. Might be amusing to hack it.

Hard drives can usually be restored for a short time to allow for a quick copy to a new one.

Best regards,
Frank

If you are looking for a Raystar 125GPS, I have a brand new one for sale. In the box never used. Shoot me a PM if you are intrested to buy it. I should of listed it on Ebay eons ago but never got around to it.

Yeah, the SR system was the biggest waste of money on that boat!
And I just learned last week talking to my neighbor that Maptech isn't even doing these anymore...

I like the concept of it - but, it should have stayed a concept!

For the most part - mine is working good now.

The only problem I have now is my auto pilot and the SR system don't always talk right - and the Auto Pilot gets a mind of its own some days.....

Notice: Minor thread hijack here.

Just recently got the navigator and have become mostly familiar with the operation of the unit and have used it 3 times now, including a 220 mile trip. Now I am trying to decide if I like or not. It seems that most owners aren’t too excited about it, but use it “because it’s there”.

What do others like or dislike about the navigator? One feature (glitch) that gives cause for some anxiety is how you can actually drive off of the scanned chart. For a few moments you are traveling beyond the boarder of one chart before the next opens up. This seems very bogus for such an expensive system and one would expect it to work much more seamlessly that this. Yes, you can double tap the empty area to bring up the next chart, but this does not always work.

I was wondering where you would get charts for the SRN? I called Maptech and they sent me to chartkit.com. But what about all of the other features such as the contour 3-d charts and aerial photos? Are these no longer supported by Maptech and SeaRay?

I need a copy of Region 3 by the way....:)

I am now thanking whatever force of nature has kept my '03 vintage SR Navigator (with all the free Maptech SW upgrades since I bought the boat in '06) working flawlessly. Now that I have jinxed myself, the silly thing will no doubt crap out halfway across the bay.
Enter the Garmin GPS 76CSX color handheld for backup. No depth, but I can read my paper charts and navigate with the handheld and the chart.

Next boat will, if I have my way, will be all Furuno gear. I really like the Navnet.

My boss has a sedan bridge 420 and his Navigator went out today before a trip. We contacted support and they suggested sending it to Colorado for repair with a 2-3 week turn-around. Does anyone know where to get a replacement unit sooner than that?

Hey MThor -

I get a laugh from your comments about the SR Nav system being a piece of *** - I have said the same from the beginning. Went through 3 of them in the first year trying to get one that actually worked..

Then, last weekend coming home from Chicago - 1/2 way back (40 miles to go) Fatal Error.... Hard Drive failed. AND - best part - warranty just ran out 3 months ago.....

Sent it in - got it replaced, etc. Had problems getting it working again - 3 hours with Tech Support - finally going.. But, yeah, definately not my favorite system. No way in the world would I get it again.

Hard Drives and Computers are not meant for a pounding on the lake...

Morovan -

The place in Coloroado is pretty good about turnaround. I got mine back in a week. Spend the extra and overnight it, and be friendly - and they will help you out...
