5.7 v8 Mercruiser w/AlphaOne Gen II
First hello to all cause this is my first post in the forum.
Im a proud owner of a Searay 220 br since 2 years now.
Its a 1991 model with a Mercruiser 5.7 v8 engine with Alpha One 2 stern.
Im not pretty satisfied with the engine for several reasons, first of all due to the fuel consumption.
Also the motor is not in a very good shape due to the non proper maintenance of the previous owner and it burns oil.
As a result of the above i have a cruising speed at 24mph and max speed at 33mph, which i believe is not very good for my setup.
Anyway that was my short intro, before two days i found a guy that selling a Mercruiser D 4.2 (220hp) 2001 model diesel engine together with a bravo 2 stern, gimbals, instruments and controls in a very very good price and shape.
My question is first if this engine will fit to my searay.
Also what about my consumption? Now at cruising speed i burn about 2 l/m and maybe a bit more..
And finaly what about my cruising and top speed with that engine?

Thank in advance,
T.

Do you have the Sea Ray 225 Bow BR? If so, that is what I have. My cruising speed is 29 to 32 MPH with RPM's of 3,000. She can probably go 46 MPH but I rarely put her to the stops. You should expect 1.5 MPG or 4 to 6 gallons per hour. Your WOT should be 4600 RPM's. Your prop should be 14.5 by 19.

Your top end depends on how much weight you are carrying. Your boat weighs 3,900 empty. Add 70 gallons gas(455lbs) 10 gallons water, people and toys, you are carrying a lot of weight. Probably 5,000 to 6,000 lbs.

You must remember it is a boat. They are not fuel efficient. Most boats at planing speed only get 1 to 3 miles per gallon.

This is the official Sea Ray archives. http://www.searay.com/Page.aspx/pageId/10532/Model-Archives.aspx

You probably have the same boat I do since they did not have a 1991 Sea Ray 220 BR. They did build a 220 in 1992. Look for your serial number on the right hand side of your transom. It will have the year, model and I think a number that corresponds to what number yours was in the line being built.

Thank you very much for your answer, very useful info.
Yes it was my wrong, we have exactly the same boat.
My consumption in very close to yours with the only difference that as i told before my cruising speed at 3000 RPM's with only one person in the boat and not to much extra weight is around 24MPH and top speed 35MPH at 5100RPM's.
My prop is 17 or 18. (I think 17).

Now can anybody help me with my question about the diesel engine?

thank you

I hope the previous owner did not take the engine to 5100 RPMs. Your boat, engine and stern drive has a Maximum rating of 4,600 RPMs at WOT/wide open throttle. What this means is that with the proper prop you should reach your WOT at 4,600 RPM. This may be one reason why you are burning oil. The previous owner may have done serious damage. Please do not take your boat to 5,100 otherwise you may be buying a diesel engine.

Another thing you may want to look at is your prop. Look up spun hub on props. If your prop is partially spun it will not push the boat properly. Think of your prop having a cotter pin. If your prop hits something the pin will break before your lower unit. Some props have a rubber lining. The rubber lining lets loose when it hits something. I have spun a few. One time the boat would not move. Another I could go 5 MPH.
