Hello!

I own a SR 200 signature from 1994 with a Mercruiser 4.3LX engine (Alpha one drive).

I have a leak, but can't detect it. When i'm on the water with the boat (fast or slow) everything stays dry, but when i leave the boat in the water and return the next day, the water is almost as high as my battery! I checked all the waterhoses in the engine-compartiment, but they are all dry. I took the boat out of the water now witrh water in the compartiment, so i thought that i would see the water coming out, but everything stays dry!???!

What can this be??? I don't think that it's the engine, but in my opinion it can only be the Alha One drive or the boatplug. I checked the plug and it's NOT leaking...

Thank you!!!

Well, the obvious choice for water coming in that fast would be a hole in shift cable bellows or drive shaft bellows. Another thought would be a leaking thru-hull such as a depthfinder.

Just a suggestion:

Had a leak - couldn't figure it out (they are evasive). No leak underway but water coming in while drifting or at anchor, but only with 3-4 people in the boat. I trailer the boat, easy to see there was no hull damage and the water was only in the forward section, dry in the engine compartment.

Finally figured out the only thruhull fitting below waterline at anchor or drift was the cooler drain tube (that white, crappy, plastic stuff) that had 'cracked' where it couldn't be seen. Under normal conditions with only one person in the boat the thruhull was above waterline. With three or four on board the fitting just barely got to waterline, just enough to let water in back to the crack. Underway the thruhull fitting was above waterline so there was no leak. Since I do not use ice in the onboard cooler (I use either 'blue ice' or frozen milk jugs so there is no melting water to drain) it took quite some time to find the problem and it was only because one day I forgot the frozen jugs and bought bagged ice at the marina which melted and drained exposing the crack in the hose.

I had a similar issue. Then my shifter cable broke in the outdrive. When we pulled the out drives we found a seal that was obviously shot. put the outdrive back on and new seal .....no leak now. we had checked bellows thru hulls etc. Would have never found it if the shifter cable had not broken!

Good luck Mike
