Seadek pros and cons, looking at installing on the back platform and cokpitt.

I installed SeaDek on my swim platform 4 years ago. Love the finished look and feel.

Pro: love the look. Con: corners are shrinking and pulling back a little in cockpit. Being told the heat and reflection of gel coat is causing issue. I talked with Tim at TT custom and he does not want to even put his aqua teak product inside cockpit for same reason on our 480

My boat is 20 years old and the non-skid on the platform and cockpit are now slippery when wet. We first looked at SeaDek as a way to improve footing, but as we learned about the material, it quickly became obvious that there are more benefits than that. The sound deadening capacity is very noticable. I also noticed that the softness of SeaDek is apparent after a day on the water. Cleaning is just hose off, wash with boat soap or tire cleaner for greasy spots. We have a SeaDek fabricator here. Having a local fabricator is very helpful because you can get a very precise quote and do some tweaks to their normal fit. As far as cost, if you consider the cost of replacing snap in carpet liner with upper end cockpit carpets, the annualized cost is about equal. SeaDek has a 7 year warranty, but they are getting 10 years+ on recreational boats. seaDek costs more but lasts 2X longer than carpeting.

We are quite happy with the appearance and overall quality so far.

We even made it on the customer page on the Seadek website:

Love everything about our SeaDek except trying to keep it clean. We got the mica color which is a light grey and even dirty bare feet leave marks. It does come clean with some boat soap and a brush, but it seems like there is always a few marks that I have to get on my hands and knees with some 409 or similar product and a scrub brush. Not a huge deal, but I think next time I will go with the grey/blue camouflage to hide some of the dirt marks.

Wow! That looks great, Frank. And it's quite an endorsement seeing you personally put it in your boat. It didn't seem like all that long ago that you posted pics of your new carpet.

Merci for the info, looking foreword to getting it install, will send pics when the job is done.

I have been on several boats in the last few weeks, shopping.

Not looking at new boats - rather mid 2000's. Seeing a lot of boats where the Faux teak products have been taken inside replacing carpet.

Really like the look.

Well, time flies when you are having fun.

I put Corinthian carpeting in the boat over 5 years ago. Honestly, it still looks great but the diesel soot from the forklifts at the marina are making it harder and harder to get it clean and keep it that way. One deciding factor that pushed me over the hump on deciding not to get the last bit of life out of the carpets was the fact that time has taken a toll on the non-skid's ability to be non-skid. My wife took a pretty bad tumble on the boat last summer then ended with shoulder surgery.....she is fine and almost back to full mobility now......so anything I can do at this point to make the boat safer while upgrading, I'll probably do....until I retire from boating at this level.

I still think Corinthian carpet is the best in the business. Others must as well because they now sell their carpeting to Snap-In and others....if it has the gray wavy PVC backing, it is a Corinthian product no matter where you buy it.

I see you guys are still drinking that Cobalt Kool-Aid. You do have a knack for finding the sharpest used Cobalts on the planet............!

Have a great summer........

Thanks, Frank. These forums taught me that the key to finding the perfect boat is patience and being ready to make a move when you find it. I said no to a lot more before finding my last two boats.

I put SeaSek on my boat three seasons ago. Still looks new. After seeing and walking on mine five of my dockmates have added it as well. Excellent non-slip characteristics.

It's definitely warmer to walk on in the hot Texas summer that bare gelcoat but NOTHING like the Plasteek(?) boat I was on that would literally blistered your feet if you didn't wet it thoroughly or have footwear on.

It's important to select a good installer to ensure the fit is perfect and that the surface is prepped correctly prior to sticking it down. One friend went with an inexperienced installer and has the corners pulling up on some of his pieces. I've had none of that.

ikes it.

I too have SeaDek and love it. I did the swim platform on the 400EC that has three levels. I think this is either my 4th or 5th year and it still looks great. I use a 1700PSI washer on it. Comes spanking clean and looks great. I like the non slippery aspect of the SeaDek as well. Even though I am going to sell my boat this summer I am getting ready to cover the cockpit with it. I may do the 270 before I part with her. Overall all I like and everyone that comes on board says the same thing.

We went with the Aqua Trak-love the look, love the feel, hate the heat. Yesterday in 96* heat, had to put a towel on it to stand on it.

that's why I am considering getting a covering for my swim platform made out of the same woven vinyl as the cockpit carpet we installed last year....it would be installed with snaps so I could take it off when we are swimming or floating and the cover would be exposed to direct sunlight....

Voila, now will have the Sea Deck installe on the plat
form.
