I recently ran across a thread that was about cleaning up bronze sea strainers but couldn't find it, so I'm starting this one. This is a project I've done on my last two boats that I find it very satisfying.

One of my winter projects is cleaning up my bilge, after having purchased the boat in late July. I have started with the raw water strainers, since while they're out, it gives me more access to the bilge and a good time to change out their hoses.

I disassembled them, cleaned the Polymer sight glass, polished every area I can get to on my work bench wire wheel/grinder and then cleaned the entire housing with a pasty mixture of all purpose flour, salt and white vinegar to get to the nooks and crannies with a small wire brush.

Once they're done and dry, I'll give them a few coats of Rust-oleum Crystal Clear enamal paint and install all new gaskets. In the past with my other boats, I've brushed on polyurethane, but have decided to try the Rust-oleum spray this time. I'll update the post on how it holds up, once I have some time on the strainers.

I disassembled them, cleaned the Lexan glass tubes, polished every area I can get to on my work bench wire wheel/grinder and then cleaned the entire housing with a pasty mixture of all purpose flour, salt and white vinegar to get to the nooks and crannies with a small wire brush.

Very nice looking - I would love to bring mine back to looking like these - just afraid putting in all the work and then having them tarnish quickly. Let us know how well the clear enamel works out.

I have used the Krylon clear with very good results. But I cook the clear in the oven for a couple of hours to get it good and dry. Let it outgas for a week then use a spray wax on it. It was good enough to survive a few near Mach 1 flights and sitting in the Eastern Oregon deserts for two years. Extreme heat and cold with plenty of rain and sun. Looked good still other than a little color fading. If it will survive that on a plastic and cardboard tube, your strainer will be just fine.878268125_l.jpg
