So taking this to the next level! Just ordered a go pro HD Hero 2 video camera with all kinds of mounts so you can clamp it to anywhere ...will start a youtube channel and start video taping awesome action shots of anything i do interesting!! I am sure will make for some great action videos! Although will probably kill myself trying to get those perfect shots hahha ..its waterproof to 60" as well so will be good for video taping under the boat etc as well!

Remember to get the new underwater case if you want sharp images under water. The "included one" is not worth a dime. ($49 extra)

I have the Tachyon underwater camera - but am considering the HD2... :)

Cool thanks Kaz!! will do will go and order the case now, will document all i do on video from now on ....i will give you updates on how the hd2 does... have a planned bikini babe adventure coming up yeehaw....captain szarkas bikini babe adventure and tour of middle harbour! lets see how many hits i can get lol I promise good stuff :)

Hey any news on your boat Kaz its supposed to arrive in two days right??? Hows being a new dad treating you? Exhausted yet lol

my boat is currently headed to Doha - so a day ride away from Abu Dhabi. So I'm hoping for landing in Abu Dhabi tomorrow. But still not word from Peters & May about the status of the documents. Without them I can't get it through customs.

Kaz: what a total bloody bummer to have your new boat right there in your home town and not have access to it! Would make me crazy!! Bloody shipping companies!! They messed me around big time and now they messed up your paperwork!! Seems like the whole shipping part is the most problematic of the whole process!!
Well Kaz I hope it goes very quickly for you and they sort things out ASAP !!
I bet you are just itching to get on your new boat!!
Got my fingers crossed for you it is painless and quick!! Keep us updated! Your almost there :)

Well I learned a new lesson today!! Here I was all proud of attaching my underwater lights. I got to the boat this afternoon to see the two strip lights I attached floating behind the boat was surprised as they were on soo tight. Well turns out I used regular caulk to attach the bracket to the light and it is not fit for underwater applications and just kind of melted away in the salt water lol well all fixed took the brackets off the trim tab put a ton of grooves in the light and the back of the bracket and stuck it back on this time with sikaflex which is suited for uw applications. Im an idiot lol the caulk litterally just melted into powder! Will be dry by tomorrow and back on it goes! Have ordered four more lights for down there I want it brighter!! Will throw them on a different battery!

Hi All

My batteries tend to drain overnight unless i shut off all the systems on the boat.. i have 3 banks of 24 volt, 2 big n200 12 volt batteries connected in series for each bank... it only seems to be the house batteries that have the drain and problem. This is with no lights on or anything using the batteries, so there has to be something leeching power off of the batteries somewhere. I have tried just turning off all of the switches but leaving the main breakers on, they still drain...now if i turn off the main breakers they dont lose power...pretty confusing, i hate electrical stuff!
My question to you guys is how would i go about finding this problem? I dont know how to even start! I have a multimeter and know how to use it, how i would test to find out what is causing the drain.

Also quite often my main battery converter tends to blow a fuse like once every two weeks... these are expnseive 15 dollar fuses ... it only happens once every so often, is this indicative of a probblem in my electrical system or its it common for big battery chargers like that to blow fuses? The thing that gets me is it only happens once in awhile and i am yet to find a cause in other words a common event that may cause it..

I think we may have mentioned it to you before that you need to use an ammeter to locate the problem. Put the ammeter in series with the positive battery cable and your battery. Shut off all systems but leave the panel on along with all the breakers. You can either shut off each breaker at a time and see when the voltage drops, or you may have to physically disconnect circuits, fuses, etc to see when the voltage drops. You should still have some small amount of drain ie battery backup on the radio, etc. But anything major should not be on.

Doug

If your multimeter does DC current, I doubt that it will do more than 10A (internal fuse will blow for anything over the rating)... so I would turn off all breakers and then hook it in series with the house batteries and work from there. Polarity is not crucial on most digital meters... if reversed it will just show a negative value.

It is not normal for you charger to blow 15A fuses (assuming 15A the proper size).

Doug: I remember when you suggested it may be the amp in my cockpit and suggested a way to check if it was. I did the test how you explained and checked it was not the amp. Then the problem went away shortly after for a good long time and has just resurfaced. Will give what you and Jim are suggesting a try and see if I can isolate the drain! Thank you both very much for the advice :)

Jim it is 80 amp fuses that it keeps blowing. My shore power gets disconnected a lot. If the charger is running when that happens it blows the fuse most times. But lately it has been blowing the fuse without it.

Will go into full on test mode and do what you guys suggested hopefully I find something :)

Have you guys read steve500s thread! Man I feel bad for him how terrible is that for him
To lose an engine on a boat he just got with a 20 k cost to fix it that really sucks! Maybe we should do one of those things that you can do on Facebook. The cause thing where everyone gives a small donation and it all adds up to something to help him out ! 20 k expense to get his boat going again that would be devastating !! I would want to jump off a cliff! Does csr have anything like that where we can all pitch in to help another member? There is a lot of people on this board even if many only threw in five bucks would add up to something and help him out! Dunno maybe the community would be interested in doing something like that? Anyways just an idea!

Sorry Rob... I guess I had the 15 dollars in my head. But regardless, there is something amiss there... and 80+ amps is a serious problem!

Well my boat is as of today in Abu Dhabi - Mina Port. And Peters & May has not sent through the paperwork yet. And getting email response from them is like hitting a pillow. No reactions at all - or very very slow. P&M are supposed to be one of the most professional boat transporters out there. I even have the CEO on cc: but responses are slower than slow.

Boat is scheduled for Anti fouling on Monday morning using CopperCoat. But if the paperwork has not gone through then boat will stay in Mina Port. I might have to pull some Wasta from my local friends to get it out of customs without paperwork (Wasta is Arabic for favours - and not something you do unless it is last resort. Wasta return favours can be a B*tch)

Anyway - your battery drain problem. Do yourself a favour and get the DC clamp meter or a DC Clamp for your multimeter. Remember you can ONLY measure on ONE part of the cable. (So either plus or minus). You can't measure anything if plus and minus is inside the clamp at the same time. Then just measure first from battery towards your DC positive distribution bar - and then from the distribution bar check each output after the fuses. Then you can quickly narrow down where the drain is going.

But big drains like that can be toilet pump? Fridge's? Slight corrosion between an exposed DC distribution bar to/from DC ground? Or it can be that your batteries are in a bad state.

To test your batteries - charge them fully - disconnect them for AT LEAST 30 minutes to let them settle with ZERO load. Then measure the voltage. If voltage is >12.5 they are fine. If voltage is 12.3-12.4 there are a bit tired. If voltage is 12.2 or below they are fried... (double up for 24 volt measurements... I have no experience in 24 volt electrical systems and to tired to do the math :)

Kaz: damn that sucks about your boat!! Be careful with your wasta!!
Bloody shipping companies they took me to hell and back and it looks like you have fallen into their BS as well!
They pulled that number on me as well where they did not answer multiple emails for days!! They do that when it's not something in their favor or at least in my experience!! Must be frustrating as hell knowing your boat is there in port and you can't touch it!! You must be pulling your hair out!! So sorry KAZ!!!
Thank you very much for the advice as always I will take it and give it a go!

Got rear ended by an 87 year old so in the docs getting checked out will head to the boat after! Don't think this guy should be driving anymore. I was stopped at a light for like 20 seconds already and he just drove right into the back of me doing 60 k!!

Jim: yeah I figured has to be a pretty big deal to blow out an 80 amp fuse over and over sheesh!!

I have written a book on the boat buying and importing process. Just finishing up the final editing now. Think it turned out pretty good 160 plus
pages also talks about csr quite a bit and how much help I got from this place. Has been in the works for several months now. I figured if I had some sort of a guide outlining the whole process of buying and importing a boat it would have been much easier for me so I went and wrote one lol I'm nutty that way I come up with an idea and just do it as Nike says!! If it goes well will drive some more members and traffic this way :) I have a book out there already on the ball diving industry so have a good idea how to market something like that etc. figured with everyone buying boats like crazy lately because of the great prices in the states it may go well!

A lot of bad news going around lately! I get to join the club I just found out that I may be losing my berth as of Sunday!
In that case it's out to sea with me until I figure out where to go! Might have a berth in a place called point piper fingers crossed!
Anyways that's my bad news of the day! Need to figure out these battery issues going to get at it right now. If I'm out on the water I can't constantly be worrying about keeping my batteries up!!

Kaz you asked about the batteries being good or not they are all only a few
Months old had to swap them out around march will test them anyways. It's just something putting a huge drain on them I'm going to find the bloody thing right now ! Need this baby fully operational by two days time! So glad the gen is fixed!

Off to work wish me Luck!

Paul / Ozzie.
How long of a drive would you guys say it is to Bondi from the Pittwater area say in non rush hour times?

Thinking of moving the boat to Colin beashel elvina bay one of the swing moorings they have. It's just an idea as of yet. Is that right by the boat shed fuel station?? They have a tender service seven days a week during certain hours may give it a try, thinking about it plus would enjoy to spend a few months in your area. Will move initially to black wattle bay at anchor until I decide.

Non rush hour probably 1hr..

Careel Bay Marina is where I was..they have tender service 7 days a week as well. Careel bay is protected against most winds except Westerlies.
Close to bus service and Avalon Shopping centre. Get a 24v Solar panel for your boat. I bought one for our boat for when we are on the hook output is around 8 amps

Ozzie

Ozzie: thanks for the info !
I have a solar panel and went to install it today.
Used a wire snake to run the wire from the access hatch on the inside top of the radar arch . It is next to impossible to get a wire down there I spent four hours trying removed everything in the cabinets so I could get to the hole that heads up into the spoiler. I tried feeding it down from up top climbed in the hole where the cockpit ice maker goes tried feeding the wires upwards. No luck no matter how I tried!
There is a tube that heads down on both sides it's empty. My guess is it's there to feed wires down and up. Only thing is the end of it does not come out in back of the cabinetry but pretty much goes to nowhere. Past the hole where the current wires go up into an area you can not get to.
So yeah no matter how I tried I could not get wires down into the engine room through the spoiler!
So not sure how I am going to put my solar panels up there as I will
Not run wires on the outside in an unsightly way!
One question for you Ozzie, the solar panel I have outputs 18 volts when the sun is good and strong I don't need a regulator on that right?
Also I would connect the solar panel in the 24 volt configuration right?
I could go to just one of the 12 v batteries in the bank as my equalizers will charge up the second as well. How did you connect your panel to 12 or 24?

You need a regulator, DO NOT feed 18v into 12v

Does make sense ian that feeding 18 v into 12v battery prob would not be a good idea lol. It's average output is usually around 15 18 is when the sun is glaring.
If I connected it to the two batts positive of first, negative of the second then I would be charging the 24 v bank right.
Would that be a problem or would it work? I would think it would work but will ask first. Also would not need a regulator in that case right?
Still can't get the damn wires down inside the spoiler yet so may be a bit before I get in connected anyways.

Get 2 panels and put them in serial - so you get 18 x 2 = 36 volt. Then get a 24 volt charge controller. :) If you get a charge controller that can charge 24 volt from 12 volt input - the conversion will loose 10-25% of the potential Amp Hours. But don't try to charge the 24 volt system by paralleling the batteries... Get the charge controller!

But in emergency you CAN charge 12volt battery directly from most 17.x volt panels without a charge controller. But the batteries will not like it for long.

The 18 volt you measure are the OC volts (Open Circuit). As soon as you connect a load it will drop to around 15, maybe 16 volt. (But it should say that on the back of the panel). And on top of that you will have 10? meters of cable run to your batteries? that will drop the voltage quite a bit further dependent on your cable size. The ticker cable the better. AWG 6 or better as minimum - else you loose a lot of juice.

I have been told now my boat will clear customs without "delay" but I can't do the registration before the final papers are here. They are now scheduled to be sent from the US on the 13th. So I can start registration on the 16th I hope. It still sucks but at least I can hopefully keep my paint date.
