Sea Ray SSS 1993 63 ft

Ray, I suspect you will need to purge the steering hydraulics when you top off but the procedure varies based on which unit you have. Teleflex is the most likely maker of your steering system and it would be best to identify the exact model you have. Here is a link to the Teleflex hydraulic steering manuals: http://www.teleflexmarine.com/suppo...nuals/hydraulic-installation-manuals-inboard/. Hopefully the one you need will be there.

BTW, I don't think trim tab units normally consume fluid so I suspect you have a leak.

Guys I need some advice, nothing new about that right!!

While going through everything also noticed I have many many rusty hose clamps on hoses in important places like my exhaust ... Guessing it's a pretty bad situation if your exhaust tubing comes off lol so engine room wide will redo all the hose clamps with the expensive stainless ones!

Thanks all!

I use Quicksilver corrosion guard on metal surfaces - about every 2-4 months. It kept the rust on my Bowrider's engine away (apart from what the previous owner managed to "apply") - there are alternatives but I found that to work even in my salt pit. From time to time I gave it some WD40 as well - but that does not last very long (2-3 weeks) compared to the Corrosion Guard.

Alnav: yes it is teleflex but have to find out the exact model. From what I am reading it seems to work in a very similar process to bleeding the breaks on a car. Although my biz partner and friend David owns one of the largest tool supply businesses in Sydney and says he has a tool which can add fluid to a compressed system and adjust the pressure in there so may go with that option! Thank you so much for the info Alnav!! You are always here to help whenever I have a question!! You are the best!!

Kaz: thanks for the info, any and all advice is greatly appreciated always :)
I have ordered some stuff can't think of the name off the top of my head. It was reccomended by I think Alnav and a couple of others in this thread. Will just douse my engines and any other metals in it when it gets here! my engines had a bit of rust on them when I got her... I don't understand boat owners just letting their engines rust away!! That 63 I nearly got was just covered in rust every inch
Of that engine room was rusty! I wish I took pictures it was pretty shocking in there. A boat that probably cost him at least two million new was just allowed to rot!!! such a shame in so many ways!
Like you said I have heard that while popular and available & known everywhere wd-40 is not the best product as nowadays there are much much better products of the same style available it's just well known and distributed that's all.
Hey I hear you on sailboats being much harder to control less power etc. you know thinking about it. It's kind of crazy to label people according to the boats they drive on all our parts. Just cause some
Sailboaters do crazy things doesn't mean they all do and just because some motor boaters are inconsiderate etc doesn't mean all or even most are. It's kind of like saying everyone from say the Bahamas is nuts because of the actions of some, generalizing is never correct!
So I definitely need a bit of an attitude readjustment here and be more specific and say that bloody blow boater that did ..... :) I have met some terrific people that were Sailboaters while I was anchored over here super nice people and very knowledgeable, they saved me a few times when my anchor was dragging etc!! I just got frustrated a few times when there were hundreds of sailboats in the harbor and it was like an obstacle course where I had nowhere to go and was trapped and a few times when people just tacked directly in front of me while I was cruising along at 15 knots "that was scary"!

One thing that I do think is incorrect in our area is :- I have been told that the captains of the sail boats here do not have to have the training and licensing the motor boaters do so you do get some of them doing some pretty crazy things in my experience . Some of them seem to have the attitude we have the right of way end of story and do not use common sense. When you get some guy captaining a 40 " sailboat that does not know the rules and just does whatever he wants regardless of consequence with the attitude I have the right of way no matter what and everyone just has to get out of my way it can get scary. I have heard of a guy crashing into a ferry quoting the right of way thing to police after and the same with a huge cargo ship. I think because some people do not have any training they think things like " I bloody cruise ship better get out of my way I don't care if it's 240.0000 tons and can't turn or stop he has to move I'm a sail boat hahha. It's those kind of people I have a problem with not sail boaters in general but anyone that drives around like that! I think If a person driving anything be it a car, kayak, bicycle operates his machine or even walking down the street with the attitude I have the right of way in all circumstances everything must get out of my way.. Give someone that kind of power no matter what problems and dangerous situations will occur. I think some of the captains don't get that the right of way does have conditions and should be exerted only when it's safe and within the boundaries or general boating rules and common sense.
Some people just should not be allowed to drive anything but a tonka big wheel made of plastic in a padded room lol

I think at the very least the sail boaters here should be required to at least learn the rules before being allowed to captain not just given a sailboat told they have the right of way and set loose lol I may be wrong about this but that's what I have been told that they require absolutely no licensing before captaining. I'm sure one of our fellow aussie boaters can correct me if I'm under the wrong impression!
It's weird as it seems like over regulation is in abundance here in Australia why this is not regulated is confusing as everything else is and beyond what it should be!
So yeah it is not sail boaters in general I have an issue with kaz but the fact that it seems like many people that captain them here do not have proper training or know the rules so do scary things. I have all the respect in the world for a good skipper wether it be a sail boater motor boater or anything else :)

I think training is needed :) for any boater. Sail or powered.

With my old 42' sailing boat I would ALWAYS  get out of the way of a 100.000 lbs plus boat. (You actually learn that in "Sailing School" - Right of Way only applies if the Vessel you are on intersect with has manoeuvre capabilities (So Right of Way - yes but common sense rules). Big tankers, ferries etc does not have a lot of options to stop and/or turn on a dime)

Or try to get a motorised barge to move over?? .. that will never happen :)

Many countries have motor boater "licenses" due to statistics. In Denmark 9 of 10 fatalities before "licenses" was drunken motor boat drivers. So they started issuing licenses to motor boaters - so they would be able to take the license AWAY. Without license - no insurance... without insurance - not boat loan - no boat loan - kept a lot of "drunk" motor boat drivers from the seas.

Then we got the water rats (jet skies) and they kicked the fatalities right back up where the motor boaters used to be. Water rats was so cheap that you could buy them (comparatively) without a loan. So motor boat strategy would not work. Then the water rats just got banned from everywhere apart from designated areas.

So now fatalities are down a lot - but still motor boats account for most fatalities. Mostly due to alcohol (we have a strong beer culture...) The motor boater license is a one or two weekend course - and just teaches the basics. But it is better than nothing. But the little piece of paper is worth its weight in decreasing number of fatalities.

But there are a lot of bad sail skippers out there... Especially the ones that just buys a 30'-60' sail-boat with no prior operating knowledge. Many sail-boaters starts from a young age - sails dinghies then laser, then trapeze or moth - and then move on to keel boats with "age" - and they usually know what they do. But the guy who just got a company bonus and buys his first boat as a 40' show off sail boat - should be forced to have training before being the skipper. No 2 weekend course can prepare them for a sail-boat that size.

I hear you Kaz and I am with you on that!! I think anyone that operates a boat should have training no matter what kind of boat! So that at least know the rules!
I think it would save a lot of lives and prevent many accidents !
I was told by a captain over here that the majority of incidents on the water in our area are with sail boats but number one he could be just talking out of his ass and number two that could be due to the fact there are so many of them here! Australians are huge with sailing there are clubs and sailboats every direction you look!
Jet skis are banned in most major water ways here as well like you said
People go nuts on those things! I am
Not sure if this is the actual story but it's what a friend told me. There is a house here right on Sydney harbor called Kirribilli house where the prime ministers and heads of gov stay when in Sydney it's exactly opposite the opera house great spot . Supposedly a good few years back the prime minister at the time was looking over the harbor and some hooligans were going crazy nearby with jet skis. He yelled out to them to take it easy and they pretty much
Told him to go f$&$$) himself. Apparently jet skis were banned a week later! Always the idiots that ruin things for others !

Kaz: do they breath test boaters over there?? I know they are really strict about it here which is great!! New years eve I got stopped multiple times by cops and breathalized!! Drinking then driving a boat is as dangerous as drinking and driving a car!
A kid was killed over here last year his captain ran him over he was trapped between the prop and the running gear. First he nearly drowned then once they got him out died from his injuries. The captain was pretty young if I remember right early 20s and I think a rented boat and was way over the limit with
Alcohol!
I do not touch a drop when I boat even when safely on a swing mooring! You never know what may happen
And its just not worth it! Funny some
People don't think they can have fun without a drink! I have just as good a time sober! If I'm captaining alcohol is out for the duration I'm on the boat! I don't drink much anyways. That's what your 20's are
For lol

In Denmark they do alcohol tests - but not often enough.

In the UAE they don't really care that much. It's a Muslim country - so alcohol consumption is only for people with permit... That means they only check if you did something stupid.. But if you did something stupid and had been drinking - you are put straight to jail for a minimum of 30 days. And jails here are not like the cosy western jails with private rooms and exercise yard. Its 40-50 people sharing one room with toilet in the middle.

But still an amazing amount of people here drive after consuming alcohol. (Even local Emirati's) - and mostly the police is nice if you have not caused any problems. They will even "guide" you home. But if something DID happen all hell breaks loose.

Kaz: sounds very similar to the Bahamas except hell didn't break lose Even if you did cause trouble lol got away with anything in that place was a very relaxed way to live. Good in some ways bad in others!!

I need some advice guys. Alnav you posted instructions for teleflex steering. This is hynautic engine controls. I have the instruction
Manual and understand what I have to do. The psi in the system is supposed to be between 90-120 psi. Well my system was down to 60 psi hence throttle controls were difficult to advance. I read to use a simple bicycle pump attach it to the air valve... pump away and you could get the pressure up so I got a big foot
Pump. Attached.... pumped now my psi is 40 lol. What do you use to repressurize these hydraulic throttle controls?? I am worried to use a compressor as I don't want to over pressurize the system. Now with it at 40 I doubt it will even work so I can not use the boat until I get this sorted. Any of you guys have this throttle system and know what is used to pressurize the system ? The foot pump was not a good idea.

Thanks!!!

maybe a small compressor with regulator, turn it down to maybe 50psi output and give it a short burst and take another reading.

Molson: pretty much what I did in the end. Was not that simple took two try's at compressors and getting the right attachment was also tricky. Took a bit of doing but now finally have the hydraulic throttles at the right psi and topped up. Just getting the right fluid for it was a real pain! Then ended up having to bleed the system and get all air pockets out it was quite a big job in the end!

Guys have a question has anyone here ever used a product called Fire-glaze If so what do you think? Negatives, positives?

What a **** few days!!! First getting the throttles working. Then the starboard engine did nothing when I went to start it. The mb toilet vacuum pump started just continuesly cycling so either a leak in the system of the pressure switch. Then started her up and all kinda of alarms went off. One of the few times I have not checked the oil before startup. Both engines are very low on oil! This is bizarre as a week ago both were three quarters full and she has not been used since! So there must be some major oil leak somewhere dunno.
Crappy few days but like always will figure it all out and get her running properly just sucks as everything was going so good!

Just part of the boat club, Rob. Haven't been out on mine for ages, due to anti- fouling, anodes and then having to wait for a new propellor to come in from Sweden, etc.
Everything finally right last week. Spent Saturday, doing the vacufush toilet ball valve, and one of the Port engine rocker cover seals.
So Sunday we decided to have a Whale watching cruise. My daughter had 3 of her friends, we had nibbles, and BBQ ready. Poke the nose out of the pen, and the starboard gearbox jammed in reverse!
Waited a week now to get it back up on the slip. Aaaaaagh

Ozzie,

Was good to meet you yesterday! Had a great time at Quays Marina - really nice part of Pittwater. I think you'll enjoy the benefits of having your boat at a marina compared with a swing mooring - just makes boating that little bit easier. I've actually saved that video to my computer now - just wish they had parties similar to that in oz. Nothing that I know of yet anywhere near Sydney anyway - I think boating is a lot more expensive here than some parts of the world which might have something to do with less young people on boats and less parties?? Would happily be proven wrong on that one!

Rob,

Sorry to hear you've had more issues with Le Cabaret.. Boat maintenance seems to be a never ending story! Hopefully you get on top of these issues quickly.. How's your business plans progressing? Any trips on the horizon?

I finally got the boat decked out with LEDs.. They are Horizon Star Energy brand or something - seem to work pretty well and none of the 50+ I installed were faulty so I guess that is a good sign. Definitely think the warm white is bright enough for 99% of applications.

I've still got to give the jet tender a service - had it out for a couple of hours last Sunday and it actually stalled after a real hard run? Started up again instantly so no idea what might be wrong there - The LCD screen just flashed a couple of times and then dead so might be an electrical issue. How often do you change spark plugs in yours? Being two stroke I'm guessing it's best to change them fairly regularly. Does your carb have an adjustment for oil mixture? Ours is twin carb so I'm guessing that's one per cylinder - would hate to mess up the adjustment and run one cylinder lean!

Paul

Hiya guys

Awesome that you two finally met up, surprised it has taken so long seeing as you two live in the same area and go to the same spots with your boat!! You two have probably been right next to each other multiple times and didn't even know it!!

Paul: just find out what carbs you have on the jet then get on the net, you should be able to find tons of info on exactly how to adjust it...i rebuilt my carb when i have never done anything like that before just from watching youtube videos...have you checked your battery ground? I was having all kinds of power problems and it turned out to be a shorting out lose battery ground...could be something like that going on...i was on my way to darling harbour tonight and the jet just stopped dead in the water about a mile from the big boat...some dickhead threw a 12 ft piece of rope in the water and now its all wrapped around my jet impeller...took me almost two hours to row home grrrrrr. now I'm gonna have to flip the thing on its side to get that damned rope out...its wrapped around and around the jet!! As for the biz, it was supposed to start right after the boat show but not sure right now...my partner has had some problems getting the business end together...i have the boat all spruced up and ready.... but that end is not so it may be a bit later at this point...

Ian: what total crap luck mate!!! That completely sucks so now you have to slip her again to get it fixed!! man you just put the damned thing back in the water!! Boats really are a trip aren't they!!! an expensive trip at that!!
Keeps us posted how it all goes!! finally will have my horn in tomorrow lol 6 months later!!

Ozzie, i really dig that video swell...such a shame we don't have events like that around here!!! maybe we should organise one in summer time yeeeehaw!!

Still waiting for my mechanic to check the boat out before i start her up again!! being extra cautious and want him to go over everything before i run her again!! its unlikely there is any major damage but i will not take any chances and just wait for him!!

Went down to the Marina this morning, before I went to work. Boat was finished and they were going to drop it back in the water. Spent 2 days on the slip, **** I must have shares in the slip now!. They fitted a new gear selector cone.
So it was going from the slip to the work berth, so the fibreglasser can do his magic, then the top to be polished.

Most importantly, think a run will be a definate for the weekend!

Ian: that is great news your boat is almost done!! i can't pretend to know what a gear selector cone is lol does sound important though :) where are you going to head with the boat? I am not sure but may be out this week end if my mechanic comes through..will go out off the heads and do some whale watching as there has ben so much activity lately with baby whales etc... I hope they give you a frequent customer discount on your constant slip usage !!! Where is the boat yard that you use? Why the fiberglasser, did you damage the hull at some point?

You guys know where i can buy a GFI receptacle from? The one that controls the vip berth and a few outlets is shot ..i have looked all over and can not seem to find where to get those things??
You know the brass covers that go around all the light switches and outlets, any idea where those can be ordered from? I have a few that need replacing...i went to flounder pounds but could not find either...emailed them asking no reply yet.

Has anyone had any experience removing the porthole covers on the inside? I have taken all the screws out but the damned thing still won't come off!! Don't want to tear the upholstery, can't figure out whats still holding it on.... still can't understand why all the screws holding them on are not stainless steel...they are all rusting so have to replace all of them! Just need to take the one cover off to replace the screen!

I do not want to jinx anything - so pictures post survey :) which is now scheduled for Money (4th July is apparently a holiday in the US :) )

Hi Rob - here is my update :)

Survey 1 went well - apart from Genset did not start and the Axius system did not work (disabled due to a major upgrade - that required a sea trail and a warning label to be put on) - the hoses needed replacement and one stern drive needed a tiny bit of touch up paint. Apart from that - surveyor said - "boat is almost as new"

Engine survey came back fine with compression of 192-197 on all 16 cylinders and no major error codes. (Worst was 39 seconds overheating) of 270 hours.

Survey 2 was today - where survey 1 problems was fixed. AOK.

So now I have sent the payment - ordered a new trailer - ordered shipping - and land transport from Venice FL to Jacksonville - where she will hopefully board on the 8. August.

So now it is time for a picture of "almost" my new Sea Ray 310 Sundancer from 2008 - with 2 x MAG350 MPI Seacore (Fresh Water Cooled) w. Bravo III drives and Axius Joystick control.

So a couple of pictures:

it is not a "big monster" like 53' :) but she is large enough for us. And she is the largest boat they will let me keep in my current slip...

Kaz: thats is such great news it is all coming together and she is checking out well!!! she is a total beauty looks like new, you must be soooo excited!! The good times are about to begin for you my friend!! Be sure and give us the name and sailing date of the cargo ship so we can help you track her voyage across the world!! She does indeed look pristine in the photos!! Have you thought of a name for her yet or going to keep her old name? please Keep us updated on it all so we can follow along :) You know bigger is not always better i have learned yes while having a ton of space is nice the maintenance costs etc go up with the size of the boat, berthing everything..also learning to captain her was something, probably not that smart of me starting with something this size...owning a 540 is extremely expensive! If i was starting over i think i probably would go with like a 460 roomy as hell in the back like the 540 but cost quite a bit less to keep around and much easier to operate... I am sure your beautiful boat will be plenty of room for you and work out great :) She is the perfect size week ender and get away boat for a couple or 4 people etc :) I am sure i speak for all of CSR when i say congratulations my friend!!

Guys anyone have any idea what the hell this thing is...its right behind the 240 V panel and is not in the 540's parts list!! I translated the words on it from italian to english and it says thermal auto recovery ...thermal auto recovery for what lol
IMG_2409.jpg

Putting my horn compressor in is quite a challenge, i figured out why the old one burned out the pressure switch is bad..so have a new pressure switch incoming and have all the bits and pieces...just have to plumb it in when it all gets here...

You picture is of a transformer - 120v to 24v. I don't know if it has rectifier our outputs 24volt ac - or 24volt dc. If it is a "pure" transformer with no rectifier - they almost never break. It can take 100 Volt Ampere (V*A) - most likely for your cabin lights? or maybe your horn?
