Sea Ray SSS 1993 63 ft

Ok this is going to sound like a crazy question. Is there some sort of large marine life that eats growth off the bottom on boats here in Australia ??

For about two hours now it has sounded like there is a scuba diver under my boat and bubbles of air are coming up against the hull. Like something is sloshing around against my hull. It is also slightly moving the boat!! I have gone out with a strong flashlight several times and can not see anything it started at the stern is now about midships. Earlier was under the bow. I swear it sounds just like big air bubbles hitting the hull. It is so so weird!!

Is there something I don't know about here like the manatees in Florida that maybe be sloshing around against my hull?? It's totally calm like a mirror out there so it's not waves. I dunno what the he'll this is it's so weird!! It's definitely not a diver!! Ozzie, paul, Barlowe wtf could this be?? I know at one point a baby whale was separated from it's mother and trying to suckle on yachts could it be something like that ? Although although in here in rozelle bay??/ it's keeping me awake and I have to
Be up at 8 it's no little sound !

At first I though am I taking on water or what. So strange I'm dying to figure this out!! And whatever is is it's big enough to actually make my boat rock!! It's been doing it for hours!! So confused lol any insight from anyone would be great !!

Hi guys*

This boat certainly keeps me on my toes. Got the cmap nt + card for it today. Much nicer to have my plotter fully populated rather than just shire lines!! Since I have come to Australia it seems to need calibration or something ! Always seems to be a good 10 to 20 ft off our actual position. Do these things need to be recall rated to work with Aussie satellites or something ? Anyone know??

Rob, this problem might be caused by the chart datum setting on your plotter, it might still be set to a North America datum. The correct datum should be identified in the cmap documentation and it's usually settable in the plotter's set-up menus.

That sound you're hearing.........It could be this!

Loool that would be cool if it was either of those lol was a strange night finally went away about an hour after I posted.

Keep Smoking the "Sheesha"!! Your boat hasen't been in the Water long enough to get Growth!! But you do have Dugongs which look like Manatees but have a Fluke Tail as aposed to Manatees Round one!!!

No Dugongs in Sydney harbour.

I cannot think of any large marine life in Sydney Harbour that would cause the things you said Rob, maybe you had some nosey scuba divers .

OMG... I have spent the last 3 days of my life caatching up on the last 5 months of yours absolutly amazing Rob. Congrads on all the hard work and the beautiful vessel you have. I laughed. I cried. I just could not stop reading posts... I am sorry to inform you that you have been bitten by the boating bug and its nothing but adventure from here... the searay slogan where land ends life begins has def become true for you. Glad you are safe and happy boating... Jason

Hi guys, hs been awhile since i have posted so i thought i would pop in and drop a line. Things are going well, have been super busy either working on the boat or out on trips with it... i have been ashore 4 days total in the last month... I decided to wax the boat and figured i will do it by hand as i need te work out anyways...no buffing machine!! Wow am i tired hahhaha what a huge job and i am only half way done...just washing the boat was a massive job ...but waxxing then buffing ...holy crap hahhahah but she looks great and is shining ...also like knowing my gelcoat is protected!!

I contacted atlas and found their rep here in Australia he has converted my plug for me ordered some relays i need at 260 bucks each ouch... my atlas system will all be set up and running as of next week ...been using the generator a lot which is pretty expensive!! Bimini top guy is coming tomorrow, will get all new isenglass on the front of the boat.

She is running well so far, have not had any problems apart from the solenoid in my swim platform motor kickikng the bucker!! I use the tender a lot so really need that to work properly...has been a real pain climbing down in the engine room and jumping the motor to get the tender in the water!! Damn that thing is a lot of fun... super fast and handles the waves really well ...i have been a bit of a water taxi shuttling people all over in it.... people have stayed the night then i run them to work in the morning with the jet hahhaha

Have been out a lot staying in different spots around the harbor.... took my family out to middle harbor for 5 days...9 of us on the boat and wwe were not cramped ...was a really nice time ...caught some amazing stuff fishing!! made a bonfire on a secluded beach ..was a really good time!!!

Anyone that is in sydney i am hosting a party on the boat going to darling harbor after cruising around a bit ...will be this saturday ...if someone from here wants to go let me know!!

Anyways all is good...life is fun and everything is coming along very well :)

Good to hear from you Rob. I'm glad you're making full use of your boat.

BTW, the picture of a tent on the bow of a 54' Dancer is priceless. It may have to become my screensaver!

Beautiful shots!

Thanks for checking in. I agree- the pic with the tent on the bow might need to be in the 2012 calander!

Cop: That was funny!! it went right on top of the sunpad so it was nice and soft for them ...the the kicker, since it is still pretty cold here at night, i turned the heat on in the boat and opened the salon hatch ...it opened right into the front of the tent...the heat flowed up and the tent was so nice and warm for them lol ...so they had a heated tent for the night!!! worked great so whenever i have too many people for overnight trips will hit a tent up on the front ...got some comments from kayakers in the morning they were quite amused by it lol! That was a fun trip, took the whole family and some friends away for 5 days! the bonfire on the beach was fun, we made it too close to the water at low tide ...the lamb we were cooking on it was half done when the ocean came up lol there was a lake in the middle of our fire but it kept burning long enough to finish the lamb :) My sister is nuts i had to talk her out of bringing a pig she wanted to roast on the spit over the fire hahhah... i dont mean a piece of pig ...i mean a whole baby pig loooooool

my inexperience of running a boat like this kept me up a few nights ...anchored in a pretty narrow corridor one of the nights and was paranoid the anchor would slip or when we swung around with the tide would hit the shore so i stayed up all night on guard until someone woke up for the morn lol ... could you imagine if the boat slammed into the shore while we slept ..wasnt having it hahhaha also my brother in law was lowering the winlass for me and the button stuck so it free flowed for a bit ...dint know how much chain was out ...so i just said stuff it and stayed up!! the we hooked up to a swing mooring one night, i guess boats this size are not great for swing moorings!! there is no center cleat but the two on either side of the bow ... well we kept drifting over the bouy and it kept hitting my hull ...so i added a second line one from each cleat then tied one of them off to the anchor in the middle of the line ..it was attached to the cleat as well! this kept the bouy off to the front and away from my hull !! i still get pretty paranoid when i over night away from a wharf that i will mess something up and end up onshore while i sleep lol so i am way over cautious!! I guess thats better than being blase about it!!

Everyone thinks i am way to protective of the boat, i make people take thier shoes off ..run around behind everyone cleaning any marks they leave etc...just constantly babying the hell out of it to keep it in top notch shape!! i check everything like 6 x a day lol ...go down in the engine room every day and sand then rust coat any rust that starts... i am pretty bad that way, i keep it super clean as if its in a show room lol any mess on it makes me mental ..dishes done right away, clean any fingerprints... it kind of annoys people but cant help myself...put so much into this i want to keep it in perfect condition! My sisters kids made me so paranoid as they spilled stuff and dropped food everywhere lol i was like a vacuum cleaner following em around fixing their messes right away hahah

Figured out what those weird sounds are that i wrote about a few weeks ago ... it happens every low tide! This section of the harbor has nothing but mud under it and deep mud.... at low tide huge pockets of gas come up all over the bay..big enough to rock my boat ..and it goes on through out low tide for several hours.... listening to it now lol

I may buy a triton 24 sail boat for resale... I can get it for 8k...there is nothing wrong with it just needs new lines and a good clean... i know they sell for 15k plus so a bit of work and could make some profit on it ..the boats on the hard here where i am berthed.... thinking about it, although its so much work maintaining this boat i dunno if i have the energy to also work on a second!!

ozzie: Paul : know anywhere i can get parts for my westerbeke generator here in Australia???? The raw water pump is leaking so i need to replace it ...or can those be rebuilt??? the salt wter is leking into the case and causing different parts of the engone to rust...i have sanded them all down and applied Othos anti rust treatment ..apparently it turns the rust back to steal via some chemical rection ..also painted over it again...but i know its not good for that thing to leak ..might be less pressure than needed to keep the system cool ..it was running a little hot thats why i went down there ..also found out it had no oil in it geez...so many systems on a boat its hard to keep track of all you need to check!! after adding the oil its now running cool again.... they have the bloody hot water boiler right behind the gen so its so hard to get to that part ..this is going to be fun!!!

finally got an Australia cmap card for my plotter...wow what a difference that makes lol ... it seems like it is impossible to reach the end of the list of things i have to do! every time i get one batch done something new comes along! trying to get the desalinator functioning again among so much else!! have spent from morning till like 2 am every day since sunday and still only a quarter way done with most hahah well at least it keeps me busy!!

Don't you just love boats, they never let you get lazy as there is always something else to be done. lol

Rob give this mob a call and see if they can direct you to a place in Sydney for the genset spares. Otherwise I am sure they will have what you need.

Great pictures Rob!! Glad to see your adventure ended on such a great note. The pictures of the camp fire and night sky line from the bow need to be submitted for the 2012 calendar. Enjoy!!

That tent idea is fantastic..showed it to a mate and he mentioned the hatch inside the tent could be used as a dunny your own private amenities (LOL) sort of cracked me up thinking about it
