I have a 454 with alpha 1 stock mirage propeller comes out of hole and gets on plane good but when you trim out to get more speed it loses grip on water. Will a 4 or 5 blade prop help this?Don't want to lose performance out of whole and would like to get more top end I can get up to about 5000 rpm on tach right now. I know going up in pitch will lower rpm but don't want to lose coming out of hole as I pull a tube majority of time.

There is always a trade off when you change propellers. They only one I know that tries to address the issue is mercury high 5 with the adjustable vent holes. I've read that th 19p is terrible. I have a 17p high 5 with some small holes opened up. Performance is acceptable although a little slow to plane pulling a skier. It's fine for a tube. I would like to try opening up the holes more for the hole shot. It will over Rev at top end if I let it but I can get 45mph at 4500 rpm on the right day with a little trim 50 mph if all the stars line up. Research well before you buy. It can be an expensive lesson on what doesn't work.

I have been there on my big boats.Hoping to get sent right way with someone that had one of these older boats and would share there knowledge.

I was a 22 Pachanga owner many years ago. My friend who also owned a 22 and worked at the local dealership tested props. At that time the stock quicksilver 3 blade cleaver prop was best top speed and better than the mirage. This was for speeds in the 0-70 mph range. The mirage was better for acceleration. Boats that like bow lift run faster with cleaver props not round ear blades. Thee props get the bow higher and less hull friction in the water. Going to 4 blades will slow top end with increased drag. I'm no expert and prop technology has changed but a 3 blade cleaver is a good start . If these props are no longer available at Mercruiser see Hydromotive Engineering Props or ebay.

Thanks for reply that's what I was looking for!guess I am right where I need to be.You just saved me a bunch of money.

We ran a alpha drive-1.32/1 ratio and a 21 cleaver with the stock 330 HP 454 up to about 4600 rpms. Later with a higher performance 454 built like the old mercruiser 365 HP the same prop hit 5000. We tried an inch of cupping and rpms dropped to 4800 which seemed a little low. The 21 pitch seemed right on for the 454 setup. Later years the 454 had the bravo 1 drive and a 1.5/1 ratio which worked with a 23 pitch prop to get similar rpms.

That is prop I have now 21 pitch. Will be calling it good.keeping boat stock. Thanks for replying

I have an 86 Pachanga with a Stroker 383. I have an Alpha SS(1:32ratio) drive running 21 Mirage. I get 64mph on GPS @ 4900rpm. I would love to try a 23 pitch or a cleaver but my drive is a Counter Rotate and I can't find props to try!
