sea ray motor shut down when putting in gear

The motor shuts down when I put it in gear, I know it has a part that plause the motor when putting it in gear, can this be ajusted. 1985 sea ray sundancer 350 V8 mecr drive. Don't know much about how the gears work I was told the motor has a interupter that kick in when putting the boat in forward or revirse and when this come on it stalls the motor. What should I do. Thanks
