This was a very sad accident. My sister and brother-in-law were out there last night and there were alot of boats out there that did not have any LIGHTS on. My sister said it was not only small boats without light there was also boats their size (40' SeaRay Express) and larger. Could be the Coast Guard didn't even see them if they did not have their lights on.
 
We've done a lighted parade the last couple of years (our is not big). Radar, as Doug said is the only way you can see other boats. The glare of all the other lighted boats, etc. make it almost impossible to see anything. I almost hit a moored sailboat one year (no anchor lights, etc.) as I was so focused on the boat in front of me (in the parade) I took my eye off the radar and missed it by 5 feet.

I have no idea if the boat had its lights on or not.

However if the investigation concludes that the reason the accident occurred is because the boat did not have its lights on I would have an issue with the findings.

Contributing factor (if they had their light off) ok. Primary blame? I would be very disappointed if that was the conclusion.

Although I keep our lights on when we boat at night, I see so many boaters that keep their lights off during fireworks and activities like this one it’s not reasonable to expect that there are not boats with their lights off.

Again, I don’t know if the Sea Ray boat had its lights on.

Even if the 26' sea ray was doing something wrong (ie. no lights etc.) I think the career of the CG captain is over. He was responding to a vessel grounded which would not be an emergency warrenting going that fast in the dark in a crowded harbor inmo .
 
So why didn't the CG have their radar on?

If you did, can you please post a link?

I know there are many different articles out there regarding this accident and basic facts are in confect, even the number of people onboard. I did not read any mention of radar.
 
Horrible accident. Anchored or underway that family did not have a chance against that CG going so fast. Prayers for all involved.
 
The coast guard vessel did have radar onboard. I do not know if it was on.

Here is a photo of a sister ship to the one the coast guard was using. It's a 33 foot Responder.

It was the coast guard, not the auxiliary as had been incorrectly reported on some of the online articles.

This same thing happened here in Charleston S.C. weeks ago with our boat parade of lights. Fortunately, no loss of life at this one. It's upsetting to see multiple people aboard these CG vessels( with high tech radars I'm sure)and not being able to avoid a collision. Stand on vessel on or not!!! And to not render help right away? What the heck is that about!!!!! NTSB is involved in this one as well...

A good friend of mine is a Captain for "The Thriller". Not the one that was on that night. He told me last week it didn't look good for the Coasties from what he knew...

How tragic. However, all the finger pointing in the world will not bring this young man back.

Not just the family needs prayer, but also the individual responsible since he/she will have to live with the guilt of this night for the remainder of their life. Not to defend here, but any of the people I've ever known who have chosen a career where rescue is paramount are especially hit hard if they cause a loss of life.

I just can't imagine...

I have never before heard of such a thing.

That's why we didn't participate this year..........

Speculation is not helpful at this time. Let's see the reports.
 
I don't know.... I'm one for speculation. It is that type of creative thinking that allows us to avoid being in a similar situation. It is important to stipulate what is speculation and what is fact. But let's speculate away. No lights, too much speed, not using radar, etc., are all things we should discuss.

"Witnesses on Thriller reported the military vessel hit the catamaran, then took off from scene of the accident, and did not offer any immediate assistance to the catamaran. Instead, moments later, another 41-foot Coast Guard rescue boat arrived to treat the injured passengers aboard Thriller."

It drives me crazy that Tigers sex life is more important then this news. Heads should be rolling!!!!

The CG vessel may have been on a mission where there was immanent lost of life. They hit the cat and saw no immanent risk and called for a second CG vessel to come to Thrillers aid.

Mind you,,, This story where the CG vessel struck Thriller is not the same as this thread is speaking of where the boy 8yo was killed.........

It said there was minimal damage above the water line to Thriller and they took off. It says not why they did but I bet when the investigation is over it will be that there was a Life and limb call on the first CG boat....

Then it tells us the other larger CG boat came in and rendered aid to Thriller..

They were on patrol. On the way back to dock. There was no call at all....
 
Ummm OK I stand corrected. I have no idea what went down there. Was just trying to give some benefit to the doubt of the CG/.
