Sea Ray hits reef and sinks in Niagara River

That's too bad.......I hate to see that. At least no one was hurt and that is the most important thing!

So was that a late 80s 300 DA or 340 DA? They called it both a 32 and a 33' boat. The LOA of a 300 could be condsidered a 32' but a 340 is like 37'LOA. That is some impressive current on that river, looked like about 6-10 kts. Wasn't the CG worried about fuel spilling since they let the boat sink by the stern submerging the tanks and vents. I would have thought they would have grounded her so the vents were above water if possible. That "reef" must be a rock ledge, must have taken the bottom out of that boat. Looked like a fairly nice boat too. Fortunatley no loss of life occured.
Why didn't they tow it to a travel lift and gradually pump out the water and lift at the same time? This would have helped precent any further fuel/oil spilling into the river.

I saw them working out there monday on the salvage of the Sea Ray. It is a shame, but, as said, no one hurt.
The two reefs at the mouth of the river claim boats every year. The bayliner that went down in early August was there quite a while (and still may be, I haven't heard that they got it out yet). They put a bouy on the wreck site, and we cruised over it twice to check it out, gave me a creepy feeling to see the boat laying down there. Thankfully, no one hurt in the Bayliner incident either.
The video of Lake Erie towing and the coast guardsman interview were shot at our marina.

Different speeds in different places, but close to 10 kits there.

I have to dock in about 3-6 kts. Our marina has no break wall and is right in the current.

In 1988 a barge got trapped by the current against one of the Peace Bridge piers. It took the Corps of Engineers 6 months to free it. If I recall correctly, they blamed the barge for raising Lake Erie by a foot...

Hi folks I am new to the club but could not help but join in when I seen there was a forum post about my poor boat:smt089. For everyone wondering she IS a 87 340 Sundancer. All the channels try to say she was a total loss. Well, I will tell you they all are wrong:thumbsup:.

I have decided to put every effort into her rescue. I know she acquired many fans as she sat in the river and thought if there was enough interest I will create a blog dedicated to her revival. I have spent all day today taking pictures and discussing our plan of action with Tom the owner of Wheelhouse Marine on Grand Island in New York. I have just purchased the domain www.savemysearay.com. My plan is to have pictures and videos of her as we restore her. I will post pictures of her current damage on here for anyone interested tomorrow (just need to upload the pix from my phone).

FYI: we hope to run the motors on Saturday :smt038:smt038:smt038

I have pulled together every penny I own along with lots of begging and borrowing and was able to scrape together the money to pay for her rescue from the grip of the mighty Niagara River. Unfortunately, I did not have insurance at the time of the accident (this was going to be our final trip of the year), I was forced to find $14,000 for the rescue.

You are facing a situation nobody here would ever like to deal with... your boat seemed very well cared of and I understand why you want to bring her back to life! Good luck and keep us posted!!!

Hi everyone sorry about the link not being up yet. I have to wait for 1and1 to finish the domain registration process. Well as it is only fair to share these photos first with my fellow Sea Ray owners. Here are the pictures I promised of the damage and what I have to work with.

Makes me wonna cry.... :smt089:smt089:smt089
How fast were you going??? It seems your boat pounded on the bottom rather than hit a rock while speeding...

wow.

Well. . .look at the bright side: you were probably itching to do a full restoration and repower project over the winter anyway. .. right? :)

WOW, sorry about all the damage. You have one thing going for you, she sank if fresh water not salt. Get her dry as fast as you can and "pickle" the engines to prevent corrosion from setting in. I'd put fans and dehumidifiers in her round the clock and remove all cushions, carpets and anything else that can hold water. Shop vac everything as dry as possible.

Good luck!

We have spent the past couple days cleaning up the mess and shop vacing water out of every crevice. We are looking good for starting the engines tomorrow morning. I am very excited. Once the big job with the engines is out of the way my gutting job will be much better, knowing she still runs and the motors are pickled will be a load off my mind. Have a good night all.

Hi all, well spring is finally here. I have been getting things together and preparing for my sweet girl repair and resto. I have been getting a lot of things together and planning some major changes. I hope to get some new pix posted and an update on progress. I want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and advice. I have gotten a little more detail of my plans on the blog I started at www.savemysearay.com. I will be posting credit as time goes on to all the people who have helped and hope everyone could also support these businesses. It is amazing how many truly good people you find after a bad situation happens.
