I just received 4 gallons of Sea Hawk Cukote Biocide Plus # 3545 bottom paint.

I need to compare the compatibility to the Sea Ray factory paint to ensure proper application of the new paint.

The Sea Hawk rep told me that I may need to apply another product following sanding to ensure the new paint adheres. He didn't send me that product so I am assuming I don't need it.

Does anyone know the brand/type of paint Sea ray uses at the factory in 2003 models?

BTW, I got the paint for free from the friend that works for Sea Hawk so I would feel like a fool for emailing and asking him why he didn't send it!

Sae Ray has used Pettit Hydrocoat Ablative paint for many years now. http://www.pettitpaint.com/fileshare/product_pds/1184006.pdf If your bottom paint is the original coating applied by Sea Ray then it is likely to be the Hydrocoat.

I can't tell you about issues you may have if you apply the new paint right over the Pettit Ablative. I would assume the instructions on the new paint can may caution you about how to apply it over an exisitng bottom paint. Likely too the Manufacturer can be contacted if necessary to make such inquiries.

As far as the factory paint goes, I am a big believer in the Hydrocoat paint. It does a good job in fresh water in our climate. The only thing that is some what of an issue is the fact that Sea Ray does not scuff the gel coat at the factory before applying it. As a result it can come off where trailer bunks or lift straps or fork lift arms contact the paint. In that case just gently scuff the gelcoat with sandpaper and re-coat the affected areas.

CuKote is an ablative as well. As long as you prepare the bottom surface well, there shouldn't be an adhesion problem. By "prepare it well", I mean sand the bottom everywhere with 80 grit paper or discs to the point where 50-60% of the bottom is white. Just scuffing up the old paint isn't good enough and won't get the job done.

We used an epoxy barrier between the old and new. We learnt the hardway and didn't the first time and it all flaked off!
