So there's an excerpt from the BoatTest review of the 510FLY, suggesting that the 510 "signals Sea Ray's entry into large motor yachts".

Um… hello?

Can you say 58DB, 56DB, 52DB, 61DA and/or the entire SSS series? Hell, I even saw a super clean mid-90's 650MY the other day.

Either Boat Test has a short memory or someone is feeding them bad information. I'm skeptical enough to believe that outfits like Boat Test get their talking points from the manufacturer.

Seems like Sea Ray may have forgotten its past.

So far, everything I've seen from BoatTest makes me believe that they are simply a showroom. I've never seen any serious negative reviews, everything is always "innovative" or "convenient". It's great for looking at shiny new boats, but not much for really learning about what's good AND bad about a boat. I'm guessing that they just regurgitated some Sea Ray marketing for that line.

I wonder if they're talking more in terms of quality rather than just about size. From everything I've read about the l class models they seem to be very high quality like what you would find in the larger yachts.

Boattest also said it was 1 of 3 models they were coming out with. They've got the 510 and the 650. I wonder what the 3rd is gonna be?

The Boat Test personnel have a little bit of a know-it-all- "God" complex. I really doubt they even consulted Sea Ray Sales or Marketing, unless it was to find a boat to board. They announce when they get on a test boat that they will be running the boat and they don't need any input from anyone. If it were my $4.0 mil boat and was the only one of its kind in the entire world on a trip to showcase the boat to the dealers and customers, I think I'd have to change the Boat Test guy's perspective or invite him to wait about a year until there were boats in inventory.

I knew about the L650 express. Just went on the site again and they are coming out with a L580 fly and express in late 2014.

haha - I had a email exchange with BoatTest ages ago - asking why all boats was great and had no downsides. They took that as an insult :) I have stopped reading/viewing their advertising....

Yeah boattest is more of a promotional site. It is nice to use to find specs and features. I can watch their youtube channel for hours.

BoatTest.com has already been on the 650Fly.

If you watch enough of their videos they do "pick" on minor things, but overall they don't say anything that would offend the manufacturers. If they did, boat makers would't let them onboard.

If you want to see a similar review site that has higher quality reviews check out The Boat Show:

In terms of the 650Fly, 650, 580Fly and 580 this has all over the place this year. SR has a page dedicated to the L Class boats. http://www.searay.com/page.aspx/pageid/159012/l-class.aspx

You will never see a negative review on BoatTest... the manufacturers pay BoatTest to test the boats and they cover the expense to fly to the test captains and film crew to the test location. There is no advertising in the videos because the manufacturer paid for the video and the website only lists brands they have reviewed.

From their website:
"Each individual builder sponsors the boat tests. Builders pay BoatTEST Publishing a fee to cover production and distribution costs only. The boat tests themselves are conducted independently by our staff of U.S.C.G.-licensed Captains and the opinions expressed in the editorial are those of the captains and have been edited and approved by BoatTEST.com. Test numbers shown are recorded by BoatTEST.com’s technical team and are NOT supplied by the manufacturers. Test results are affected by load, powertrain, running surface condition, sea state, and ambient air temperature and humidity. While our test results are certified accurate given our test conditions on test day, your results may vary."

Not a surprise about boat test.com, but my point is more that Sea Ray seems to have forgotten that is HAS a fairly accomplished history of building very high quality larger boats… And they built boats that didn't look like everything else on the market. I'll take a 2007 52DB with MANs in it over the 510FLY every day of the week. :)

Man I forgot all about the old early 90's 650MY. Anyone have the specs on that thing? Years produced and number built?
I heard there were only 14 680's produced during their run.

Boat test is fun for window shopping but not much more. Almost every "review" seems like it comes from the same canned source. Still, I love their walk throughs and videos of boats I might not get to see on the left coast, and a half hour work break can be like a mini boat show.

Here a 650MY for you on YachtWorld.

And if you want to see the spec sheet, you can download it here from the Sea Ray website.

This looks like a cool boat. And the one I saw at my marina a few weeks ago was ridiculously clean. Too bad it has Detroits, Frank W says I'm not allowed to buy a boat with Detroits in it.

Very nice boat and design. Not sure i agree that it's the "best" layout but it is nice.

Looks like a good liveaboard, that's about it. There is one out here on the delta and I have seen several for sale in Thailand over the past few years. I love how the add compares it to the new L650 Fly.

That is an awesome yacht.

That would be a cool boat if it was updated. That particular boat on YW looks like a disco lounge...very retro.

Lots of room for long term stays/live a board, but 1/2 Mil seems like alot for a 20 year old vessel that does not appear to have many upgrades done over the years.
