i have a 'tool' in my boat that i have no idea what it is or what it is for but just left it in the drawer and forgot about it. today i was looking at some boats on eBay and one had the same tool laying on the bow. it has a black football shaped plastic handle with a screwdriver type shaft. i can't remember what the end of the shaft looks like but will try to get pictures of it this weekend if nobody figures it out before then. i remember looking around the boat when i first bought it and couldn't find anything that it looked like it fit. if it matters mine is a 1986 and the one in the picture was about a 1995 so it must have been used a few years

Could it be the tool to adjust the windlass? I think you get a tool that allows you to adjust the tension on the windlass motor. We haven't used ours yet but I think that's what it is.

Possibly it is for a motorized hatch or window?

no windlass on my boat and no motorized hatches. i tried searching online for a picture of it but no luck. if i remember correctly it does look like a key of some sort. not a typical key but a tool keyed for a specific task. i believe it says Sea Ray right on the end

couldn't find it on eBay this morning but got a pic today. i guess it is threaded on the end. about a 5/16" thread.

Knob for under the helm seat?

hmmm. thanks guys. it was in the 'drawer' under the steering wheel but i think my seat does adjust. maybe it is to lock it down? i will have to check it out next weekend

If your helm seat is anything like that on the slightly larger DAs of that era, the captain's section of the bench slides forward and back on a track assembly. A knob like what you have fits into the right side (as you're facing the bow), below your thigh/below where the vinyl ends, and yes, you loosen it, move the seat, then tighten to lock the seat into position. Depending on how close to the wall your seat is, it might be hard to see where to insert it; feel around or use a mirror tool.
