I really, really try and not knock on where the new designs of boats are going as that is what the market demands, but the new 40 dancer is an absolute turd. I was so out off by the looks I didn't even board it at the CIC boat show.

I agree, at the Ft Lauderdale show I didn't even go on any of them. I was disgusted with the looks.

What where they thinking? I understand they're going after the European boats but this is a bad attempt in my opinion.

I usually like most new boat designs but from the stern that looks- Lets just say unappealing. Any pictures of the boat from another angle?
Reminds me a little of the old Carver Mariners. JC

It is awful. Total gross looking. IMO sea Ray has really missed the mark in the 40'-50' range from about 08' on.

The 54 next to it was very nice as well as the 590L.

I was also humored by the 37 to the left. 330k price tag and smaller than my 06 340. It did have nice lines though.

To be fair, the boat looks a lot better without the aft canvas.

Saw it at a Marine Max event on our local lake. My wife was so unimpressed she didn't even want to get on it.

It's hard to say if Sea Ray is necessarily going for the European look. You can see they've put the focus on the topside entertaining and making it more functional by lengthening the whole cockpit and making it a huge living space. The result is a shorter bow, elongated cockpit and swooping side windows....thereby giving it a Euro look but I don't think they started with Euro in mind from an exterior standpoint. I think the opposite, they started with the owners lifestyle in mind and designed it around that...by nature of their interior design the exterior turned into a Euro look.

I personally like new topside layouts compared to the traditional cruiser layouts of the 90's & 2000's. Those era cruisers are not as functional as the new layouts -- and I'm speaking from my experience with my 280DA and my cousin-in-law's early 2000's 44' Cruisers Yacht. Great boats but really not that functional. With these era boats I always find me tripping over the other guests as I walk around the cockpit.

With all of that said, I generally like Sea Ray's new designs but the new 400 does not look very good from that angle.

I have generally liked the new styles. However, that top looks like a complete afterthought. Part of me says why even bother with the canvas on the stern. Why not just completely box it in with Windows.
A couple of years ago I put on whole new Bimini/ camper canvas set up on my boat. My rationale for the big Bimini top was to keep my balding head out of the sun. I think the full enclosed space is taking away some of the open air feeling I appreciate about boating.
It would be a great boat for doing the Loop or for someone who wants to boat but never be in the sun.

I understand that Sea Ray spends a lot of money on targeted research and they design boats around their prospective buyers wants and needs. I'm sure they know exactly how many buyers there are for this model, and I'm sure they did their due diligence. But I just can't see anyone I know walking into MarineMax and saying "I want to spend three quarters of a million dollars on that pig." At what point do buyers just completely throw aesthetics out the window when they buy a new boat?

I think it would look better in the right shade of yellow… you know… SCHOOL BUS YELLOW - it has similar lines. Not one of SeaRay's finest designs in my opinion.

That isn't the best angle at all...the canvas just makes it look too boxy.
I'd go with seat covers instead, being it's got a sliding door into the saloon.

Forced me to go to SR website to watch the video for a second opinion.

I have been on the 40 at the boat show in Norwalk CT and thought its amazing, just how much comfort and luxury they fit into 40ft!
Absolutely plush and those stairs to the lift when lowered...SO, cool!!
It makes my 40 seem 100 years old!....it's only 21 years young (Ha,Ha).

+1. That aft canvas really looks horrible however I have been in this new boat and it quite impressive accommodations for 40 feet. The exterior looks are not horrible. Not sure about the cost though. I couldn't afford any of these boats new.

Agree, she is not looking very hot at that angle, and with the canvas up. The SR video and pictures are better. I have never been on one, but the interior layout looked well thought out for a 40 in the promo.
