Hi,

I'm looking at getting a sea ray 220 DA it needs some work doing to the boat however i'd like to know some information about these boats, this maybe a stupid question but can these 220 da's been used in salt water? everywhere i look it just says fresh water?

look forward to hearing from you all

The boat can certianly be used in salt water. However, there is a lot to know about the differences between boating in salt vs. fresh water.

There are a ton of experienced guys here on this forum. Ask a specific question & I'm sure you can find most all the information you need here on CSR.

the one i'm looking at is the 4.3l v6 is this engine powerful enough to cruise at a nice steady speed? is there things i need to look out for when buying one of these boats? this boat has been offered to me for £4,000 it needs some work doing to it however the boat and engine is in good con!

I'd be willing to bet that the 4.3 is... "powerful enough to cruise at a nice steady speed". Lots of variables though.

What year is the boat? What drive is on the boat? What type waters will you be in? (you mentioned salt, that could mean anything from small bays & inlets to the Atlantic Ocean). More than 4 people on board? Is the engine performing up to par at present? What do you consider a nice steady speed?

I had a 220DA with a 5.7 and would not want any less engine in that boat. It was later re-badged the 240DA......it's a big 22 footer.

Hi,

I'm currently in the UK, so it will be used around the coast of the UK, the year of the boat is 1990 it's 23ft long the only problem with the boat is the starboard manifold has a crack in it so this needs replacing.

I see a nice steady cruising speed of around 20 - 25knots?

I'd like to hold 4-5 people when we take this boat out, it's either this boat of the bayliner capri i'm unsure which one to get at the moment

4.3 is good for 25mph cruise @ 3700, WOT is 35 mph. Make sure it has a 4bbl carby or you will struggle to get on the plane with 5 adults on board. It will do it you just have to use the tabs.
With the high price of fuel over there you may save a bit with the V6.
I used to have a 2050 Capri but moved on as we couldn't escape from the sun with 2 young kids.
Only thing to watch out in salt water is that the block and exhausts aren't rotten if it isn't fitted with a heat exchanger?

is the 220 da a good boat or should i save my money and go for something else? what they these boats worth in good con these days?

I have a 1990 220 DA and like it a lot. It is actually just about 24 feet so dont let the "220" throw you. There isnt a lot of seating. It has a fold up bench in the back which I love becasue it is out of the way when I fish. Mine has the 5.7L and sometimes struggles to get up on plane when I have more than 4 people on it. Other than that I have no complaints.

ok the drive is the: alpha one gen two and it does have a carb but the seller is unsure which one

Looks like you don't have much more time to make up your mind. I have same year same colr with the 5.7 in it. I love the boat. X2 on the trim tabs to get you planed out. Get used to them and they help alot.
There is a very long thread in the sport cruiser forum about the 220 DA. Read through and you'll find tons of info.
I do like the stern folding seat. The table in the pics on ebay also mounts between the two seats in the cockpit. Makes a really nice area to sit and pass the day away.

yeah thanks i've just only seen thread, i know the clock is ticking, i just wished is had the 5.7l engine in it that's my only worries, however this is my first ever boat i could always fix it up sell it and buy one with the 5.7l if i wanted too, i've seen these boats go between £8,000 - £16,000 over here in the UK and this is cheap at the moment still an hour to go yet tho!

I see that the boat is on eBay but if possible, you may want to make the purchase contingent on a successful survey of the boat. Price seems very reasonable but can also be a red flag.

Bthe way: Bayliner vs Sea Ray...are you kidding me? No comparison at all IMHO.

yes very true! If I'm to win then no money would be given over to the current owner until i've checked over the boat or got a professional to do it, last thing i want is a total shed :), the only reason i brought up the bayliner was because it was in the same price margin at this boat is at the moment :)

Hi,

Thanks very so much for your information. what do you mean when you say make sure it has the 4bbl carby?

Here is the link to the boat: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160626457080&ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT

yeah the price on fuel at the moment is around £1.40 p/l i'm unsure what this boat does mpg wise

4 barrel Carb = 200 HP, some of the V6's came out with a 2 barrel carb and I think they were down around 180ish HP
I manage to get about 10 hours of mixed cruising and pottering around per 165ltr tank, That is about 3 days on the water for us. We enjoy idling around @ 1200 rpm which gives you time to take it all in and let the batteries charge up.
