Just bought a 12 footer. Anyone else have these? I see it as a safety issue for the bay.
 
Often thought about this when far from land - great to deploy off bow in the event you lose power or directional control in storm conditions/big seas - will keep you from broaching. Some also carry a drogue - this would be deployed from the stern to slow you down in a following sea and keep from stuffing the bow and/or pitch polling. Both of these are far more common in the sailing world where you can't necessarily outrun weather and longer passages are far more common. With today's access to real time weather information and fast boats, circumstances that dictate using these in a bay should be far less common - inexpensive epirbs, plb's and life rafts as a last line of defense are likely other reasons we choose to forego carrying these "traditional" aids....
