As you found out in military aviation, it's a matter of timing: being at the right place and time. It also holds true for civilian flying. You're probably getting out as a Major or LTC, so the pay isn't so bad, you'll be getting retirement pay and you've said you're going back to Delta soon. Life could be a lot worse. At least you've been able to fly and get paid for it.
My civilian aviation is fraught with moving from one part of the country to another, following jobs. After having two commuter airlines go bankrupt under me, I went to the dark side (the FAA), and have been there for over 23 years.
Do I lament about not flying for the majors--sure, but after accepting that life isn't fair, I've come to terms with my place in life and guess what--compared to a lot of other people, my life's been good.
