Sag Harbor to Greenport East or west of Shelter?

Hi, I was looking at Google Earth and will be checking the charts tonight regarding my 2nd day trip from Sag Harbor to Greeport. If thing look calm out of Sag Harbor should I go East around Shelter Island. I assume east would be rougher than West but if its calm, how are the views? I went directly to Greenport last year from Shinnecock. JG.

Its all wonderfully picturesque, I would go the longer route.
