Im getting close to launch day and trying to get my ducks in a row and need to get the required safety gear. I know it's different from state to state but had a few questions.
I got life jackets for everyone that will be on the boat and the throwing pfd.
Next says signal flares, didnt say if they had to be hand held or flare gun type, just says need to have one for night and day. So does it matter what type you have?
It also says I need Placards 1 for the proper discharge of oil,and 1 for Trash/garbage. I noticed that when I lift my engine hatch under on the inside of the lid it says something about not dumping oil etc. I take it that will be my oil placard, but what about the trash placard,I dont think there is one on there that Ive seen,,What do I need and where to put it?
I got everything else that is required, but just wasnt clear on these things.

Check under your sink in one of the cabinets.....Usually on a door under sink or where your trash is....

If your boat is over 36 feet, you need a Trash Disposal Plan as well... I have the following laminated and stuck with velcro under the sink cabinet door...

TRASH DISPOSAL PLAN (TDP)
Motor Vessel “Four Suns

General: The Captain/Owner is responsible for performing or overseeing this TDP. In general, all trash shall be collected and stored onboard in plastic bags or other suitable containers. Upon returning to port, such trash shall be removed and placed in appropriate trash containers ashore. No trash or other substances may be discharged or put overboard except as in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Beer: Unprocessed beer shall be stored at a temperature of 34 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Before disposal, beer must be processed through human kidneys and deposited in an approved Type I, II or III marine sanitation device (MSD). If more than three nautical miles offshore, processed beer may be discharged directly overboard, provided that the processing person is wearing an approved PFD and standing or squatting on the swim platform.

Bird Droppings: Fresh bird droppings shall be allowed to dry on the vessel’s canvas and/or gelcoat. After drying, the bird dropping shall be disposed of by the CTO ( “Chief Trash Officer” ) by flicking it into the water with his or her middle finger. Remaining stains may be cleaned with fresh water, or, if more than 3 miles offshore, soap and water.

Seasickness discharge (barf): Within three nautical miles from shore, seasickness discharge shall be deposited into an approved MSD. From three to twelve nm offshore, seasickness discharge may be deposited directly into the ocean, provided that no chunks thereof exceed one square inch.

Do the self-check or virtual VSC.

Also schedule a FREE VSC.

If you are missing items you do not get a fine for a volunteer VSC. They will tell you what you need. If you pass you get a sticker to display.

Either hand held or Ariel flare meet the coast guard regulations. I carry some of each.

On my boat the trash placard is on the bottom side of the door over the trash can under the cabin step.

On my boat the waste oil placard is on the bottom of the engine compartment hatch.

Gary, during a VSC have they ever read your plan? What did they say?

People have looked at it... and have never said a word. It covers all the "regulations" so screw em.

Now that's good stuff and thank you, as I have now procured it for my vessel.........:smt038:smt038:smt038

Profit of Doom, let me make a suggestion to you....before your signature name has a chance of fulfilling it's prophecy why don't you take a boater safety course. They're available through your local USCG Auxilliary or US Power Squadron, they're low cost, and will answer all the questions you asked.

A course will also make you a more responsible and safer boater.

Yes,Im going to take a class. I signed up earlier this winter and it was cancelled due to not enough people,so im waiting for it to come around in the next couple of weeks.
But im docking before the next class and would just like to be set. So im just wondering what it actually is,Just a sign that says discard garbage in a plastic bag and throw out on land and not liter. Are these just something you print off,or can you buy a small plastic sign and put it on the wall?

I bought the stupid "hey don't throw garbage overboard" sticker set at West Marine. The F'n things are about 5" x 8". It is suppose to be displayed where everyone can see it, so it's in the head by the hand towels. Anyway I didn't need the oil one (already had one) and I'm not big enough to be required for the garbage plan, but when I am I'm not going to allow bird droppings. I do like the beer plan though.
